Christ in the Garden of Gethsemane
Was Christ scared of what was about to transpire? He already knew what was going to happen but was he scared? Did he really ask God to not make Him do it?
Let’s talk about what happened in the Garden of Gethsemane.
Before Christ was taken to be crucified after the last supper with his disciples He takes Peter, James, and John off so He can pray in a garden called Gethsemane. During his prayer He asks…
Luke 22:42 “Saying, Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done.”
Matthew 26:39 “And he went a little further, and fell on his face, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt.”
Mark 14:36 “And he said, Abba, Father, all things are possible unto thee; take away this cup from me: nevertheless not what I will, but what thou wilt.”
What is this cup He is asking Father to remove? He’s not referring to the sacrifice He is about to make which some may believe. The cup Christ is referring to here is the cup of wrath. And in Mark 14:35 we have mention of an hour. What is this hour?
First let’s look at the word Gethsemane. It was an olive orchard on the Mount of Olives. But the word comes from two root words: gath and shemen. Gath being wine press and shemen being oil that is for anointing often perfumed. When in scripture do we read about the winepress?
Revelation 14:19 “And the angel thrust in his sickle into the earth, and gathered the vine of the earth, and cast it into the great winepress of the wrath of God.”
The anointed one praying in the winepress to remove the cup of wrath, the winepress of judgement and wrath just like that cup of wrath. There’s a reason I bring this up and why it’s important. Father and Christ are already setting the stage of understanding for you here. Christ in no way considered running away from what must be. He was always teaching, even from the cross as He died when He quoted Psalms 22 which was the prophecy of the crucifixion happening before the people’s eyes. Even then He was teaching.
Let’s start in Mark 14 picking up at verse 35.
Mark 14:35 “And he went forward a little, and fell on the ground, and prayed that, if it were possible, the hour might pass from him.”
This hour Christ wants to pass is the hour of temptation, not the hour of his sacrifice. Hour is important for we have a few important “hours” to understand in scripture. There’s the hour of temptation and the hour of the Lord. And we also have the hour they came for Christ.
Hour of the Lord’s true return:
Matthew 24:42 “Watch therefore: for ye know not what hour your Lord doth come.”
Luke 12:40 “Be ye therefore ready also: for the Son of man cometh at an hour when ye think not.”
Matthew 24:36 “But of that day and hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels of heaven, but my Father only.”
Revelation 14:7 “Saying with a loud voice, Fear God, and give glory to him; for the hour of his judgment is come: and worship him that made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and the fountains of waters.”
That hour that they came for Christ to crucify him:
John 12:23 “And Jesus answered them, saying, The hour is come, that the Son of man should be glorified.”
John 7:30 “Then they sought to take him: but no man laid hands on him, because his hour was not yet come.”
Matthew 26:45 “Then cometh he to his disciples, and saith unto them, Sleep on now, and take your rest: behold, the hour is at hand, and the Son of man is betrayed into the hands of sinners.”
And the hour of temptation:
Luke 22:53 “When I was daily with you in the temple, ye stretched forth no hands against me: but this is your hour, and the power of darkness.” (This is in reference to that hour and the power of the price of darkness, the one truly behind the betrayal and crucifixion of Christ…Satan and the Kenites.)
Revelation 3:10 “Because thou hast kept the word of my patience, I also will keep thee from the hour of temptation, which shall come upon all the world, to try them that dwell upon the earth.”
Revelation 18:10 “Standing afar off for the fear of her torment, saying, Alas, alas, that great city Babylon, that mighty city! for in one hour is thy judgment come.”
Revelation 17:12 “And the ten horns which thou sawest are ten kings, which have received no kingdom as yet; but receive power as kings one hour with the beast.”
I think you get the point.
Also, when Christ is in the garden praying and comes back and sees the disciples asleep what does He say?
Mark 14:37 “And he cometh, and findeth them sleeping, and saith unto Peter, Simon, sleepest thou? couldest not thou watch one hour?”
Matthew 26:40 “And he cometh unto the disciples, and findeth them asleep, and saith unto Peter, What, could ye not watch with me one hour?”
What were they doing there? They were being watchmen for Christ for they all knew they would be coming for Him soon. This is symbolic of that hour of temptation that the watchmen should be watching for and not be found asleep.
Now to the cup Christ was referring to.
Isaiah 51:17-23 “Awake, awake, stand up, O Jerusalem, which hast drunk at the hand of the LORD the cup of his fury; thou hast drunken the dregs of the cup of trembling, and wrung them out.
There is none to guide her among all the sons whom she hath brought forth; neither is there any that taketh her by the hand of all the sons that she hath brought up.
These two things are come unto thee; who shall be sorry for thee? desolation, and destruction, and the famine, and the sword: by whom shall I comfort thee?
Thy sons have fainted, they lie at the head of all the streets, as a wild bull in a net: they are full of the fury of the LORD, the rebuke of thy God.
Therefore hear now this, thou afflicted, and drunken, but not with wine:
Thus saith thy Lord the LORD, and thy God that pleadeth the cause of his people, Behold, I have taken out of thine hand the cup of trembling, even the dregs of the cup of my fury; thou shalt no more drink it again:
But I will put it into the hand of them that afflict thee; which have said to thy soul, Bow down, that we may go over: and thou hast laid thy body as the ground, and as the street, to them that went over.”
That’s the cup He was talking about, that cup of wrath. He wasn’t trying to “get out of it.” He was showing compassion hoping we could all avoid that cup being poured out. I believe this was Father showing us how He does care for those who care about Him, care enough to study His word. But there is no rapture and those who are still here during that time must go through the hour of temptation.
And to close out let’s go to John 12.
John 12:27 “Now is my soul troubled; and what shall I say? Father, save me from this hour: but for this cause came I unto this hour.”
Here Christ states he came specifically for this “hour,” why would he ask Father to save Him from it? Christ then asks the Father to glorify thy name, meaning the Father’s name, not His.
John 12:28-33
“Father, glorify thy name. Then came there a voice from heaven, saying, I have both glorified it, and will glorify it again.
The people therefore, that stood by, and heard it, said that it thundered: others said, An angel spake to him.
Jesus answered and said, This voice came not because of me, but for your sakes.
Now is the judgment of this world: now shall the prince of this world be cast out.
And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto me.
This he said, signifying what death he should die.”
Interesting that only some heard the words said by Father, others only heard thunder. Do you have ears to hear and eyes to see?
And here you have why people witnessing the resurrection was important. Watching Christ being “lifting up” from the earth drew men to follow Christ and see He was truly the son of God. And for what purpose? Not only for the forgiveness of sins but also another warning to stand for the true Christ when the prince of this world is cast out. For we are to be watchmen for Christ.
Will you be found asleep? Happy Passover!
