Today on the Catholic liturgical calendar is the optional memorial of Blessed Franz Jägerstätter, an Austrian farmer who was the only person in his village to vote against the Anschluss and was later guillotined by the Nazis for refusing to take an oath to Hitler.

When drafted to fight, he refused to fight in the Nazi wars of aggression, believing that any duty to his country could not be justified when fighting other people simply defending their own homes.

Pope Benedict XVI beatified him in 2007.
