@booster_10 I don't know how they'll deal with the plasma wrapping around and hitting the sides as the 2nd stage reenters, but 15 tons to LEO fully reusable is almost as much as falcon. This is gonna be the king of medium lift if it manages to fly in the next 6 years

@pham_alam Any argument for production lines and high volumes can be applied to potential smaller rockets as well, and we're talking long term here, so those rockets not existing yet doesn't matter. So yes, it would still be a massive and expensive rocket to produce by comparison

@antosh_1 The only serious threat to american space dominance is china, as much as I'd prefer europe to be the other real threat, since they're still nominally on our side, they just simply aren't on the same level anymore

@CJHandmer Yeah, a self sustaining moon/mars colony will probably have to be good at recycling pretty much everything, or else they'd run into resource shortages of basically everything. Another reason to support spaceflight, such developments would help alot back on earth

@Truthful_ast I've been saying for years. The artemis program has aimed for the moon since 2017, has existed since 2010, using designs from 2005, and parts from the 1980's.

HLS was only contracted in 2021, OF COURSE it's going to be the limiting factor for the timeline

@KrisSchnee @BradRTorgersen All they have to do is require that it pull an actual case file from a specific digital case library. If the link it gives you actually works, and actually takes you to a real case that really said what the AI says it said on the page it says it said it, then it's real.

@__abysmal @space_jm_ I hope there eventually is something that justifies creating such a wide fairing, maybe habitat segments just can't be made inflatable and they don't want to be stuck at 8m. Maybe the spaceforce has a sudden need for 15 meter telescopes in GEO. But no need of the sort exists yet

@__abysmal @space_jm_ Okay 12 m isn't terrible, might a dedicated large slot in a highbay for that but doable. 16 m?? That's nearly twice as wide, the extra structural reinforcements just so it survives max q would add quite a lot of weight

@DJSnM Well, if they ever do an expendable starship, then they could easily do a wider payload for the same 9m diameter. Or maybe even a wider than 9m fairing if they're willing to work with it

@deltaIV9250 They'd only need 1 mars ascent ship for early crewed missions (maybe 2 for redundancy). Enough solar, batteries, and ISRU equipment to refuel a single one may take a lot of landers, but they don't have to bring any of them back
