Today, we join the world in celebrating #InternationalCoffeeDay and for us Ugandans, this day carries deep meaning. Coffee is not just a crop it is our heritage, our economy, and our hope.

1: A Journey Through Time
•Uganda is the birthplace of Robusta coffee, indigenous to our forests.
•Arabica was later introduced on the slopes of Mount Elgon, the Rwenzoris, and West Nile.
•By the mid-20th century, coffee had become Uganda’s leading export, earning us recognition as one of Africa’s top producers.
•Millions of households have survived and thrived because of coffee, with every bean telling a story of resilience and hard work.

2: The Challenges We’ve Faced
•Price fluctuations that left farmers vulnerable.
•Old, unproductive coffee trees.
•Limited access to international markets and low bargaining power.
•Poor farmer organization in some areas.
•A perception among young people that coffee is “an old man’s crop.”

3: Opportunities Before Us

But today, Uganda stands on the brink of a new coffee era:
✅ Specialty and sustainable coffee are in high demand globally.
✅ Digital trade and traceability are opening direct market linkages.
✅ Value addition roasting, packaging, branding means more wealth can stay at home.
✅ Coffee tourism is becoming a new way to showcase our culture.
✅ Climate smart and agroecological farming methods offer a path to sustainability.

4: The Youth Factor
Here’s the reality: the future of Uganda’s coffee depends on the youth. With their energy, creativity, and digital skills, they can transform the sector:
•Using technology for marketing & e-commerce.
•Innovating in processing, roasting, and branding.
•Leading the shift to sustainable, climate-smart farming.
•Connecting Ugandan coffee to global consumers with fresh ideas.

But this won’t happen automatically. We must rethink youth involvement giving them access to land, finance, training, and mentorship. Only then will Uganda’s coffee story remain vibrant for generations.

On this International Coffee Day, let’s honor our roots, recognize our challenges, seize the opportunities before us, and most importantly invest in a youth-driven coffee future

Lastly , I dedicate myself to standing by the youth fueling their dreams, amplifying their voices, and giving my all to ensure they shape the next chapter of Uganda’s coffee journey.

To all the young people out there that look at farming as a job done by the poor and less fortunate persons in Uganda , I am here to inform you that we are past that level just for you to know if one has 4 acres of coffee they are much more wealthier than you who earns that salary of less than 3M ugx per month

You may be wondering why do I say that let me break it down for you
With 4 acres of coffee one has the capacity to earn 7M shs from each acre per season and we have two seasons in a year that making it 14M from each acre
Now multiple the 14M from each acre times the 4acres that’s about 56 M per year

And the cost of maintenance per acre is about a million shs per season that including labour and all the other inputs you need

I can’t break down all the math in just one single post but when you ask my elders like @JackieAkampwera , @GKatabazi and @salimo_paul they will approve what am telling you and this isn’t a motivational speech but the reality about life

As I close this tweet today to all the young people out there to would love to start up coffee or cocoa farming all I can tell you that it’s the best choice to do and some of us regret not having stated early becoz the fruits of farming are amazing

I appreciate the invitation from @TugumeNelsonO and the @_InspireAfrica to their coffee festival. But let’s set the record straight.

At first, they came through a friend, trying to lure me with a “well-paying job.” I turned it down. Now the same team is approaching me for a partnership and attending the festival as the first step to the partnership. Let’s be real if the foundation is shaky, no partnership will ever stand.

If that money they claimed they wanted to pay me is truly available, why not put it where it actually matters?

1: Compensate the people whose land was taken during the construction of the coffee park and road.
2: Or invest in seedlings for youth who are hungry to build something real in coffee and luck inputs
3: invest it in empowering women in the coffee value chain

And here’s my message to fellow youths: not every shiny offer is worth your integrity.
Stop running after quick deals and start demanding accountability and real impact. Our sector doesn’t need events that burn taxpayers’ money for show it needs solutions that change lives.

I stand for truth, equality, and meaningful empowerment. If anyone wants to work with me, it must be on those terms period.

Uganda’s coffee deserves better, and so do the people who grow it.
