Welcome to February.
It’s off to a mild start. It’s 2° now. High 3° (norm is -6°) with a wet flurry or shower around, mixing w/drizzle in spots. SW 15-25. Low 0°. Clearing Fri & 1°, marking the start of an extended brighter and storm free period. Enjoy! #ottawa#ONwx#ottnews
My interview with the brilliant #Fauda co-creator @issacharoff who knows more about the Palestinians than almost anyone else in Israel.
Speaking in London about the reaction of some in the West he says: “I can’t get over how ignorant these people are. When they say ‘Free Palestine’ do they understand that Hamas is a dictatorship that took Gaza by force? That they killed 160 Fatah members? That they force people to follow Sharia law?
“It is so ridiculous that it makes me angry. And it has changed something in the Israeli perception.
“I don’t like that civilians are being killed in Gaza. Hamas has created this Catch 22 situation – they attack from inside populated areas knowing that there will be a retaliation. And they hide in tunnels which they don’t allow civilians into – they are only for Hamas. And yet people are marching for Hamas.
“Now we realise that no matter what happens, even if Hamas slaughters thousands of Israelis, these people, these ‘good’ people, don’t care. At the end of the day, you can’t see it as anything more than antisemitism. It is pure antisemitism. So, excuse my French, but f*ck them.”

Today Mike Freer, the UK MP who represents the riding with the heaviest concentration of British Jews announced he was not seeking reelection due to threats to his personal safety. I am so sorry for what he & his family must have gone through to reach this point. Just awful.
"I’ve realized that reading makes me happier than many things, and when life gets difficult and complicated, part of what hurts is having less time to read."
The always brilliant @egabbert on how reading can shape a year (and a life).

We stand united with Ukraine – and with Ukrainians, who are persisting valiantly and tirelessly in their fight against Russian aggression. As they mark the Day of Unity of Ukraine, I want to be clear: Our support for them will never waver. Slava Ukraini! https://t.co/LQ4TK6Zxqa
In a world that is increasingly multilingual, becoming a hyperpolyglot—a speaker of more than 11 languages—remains a rare, herculean feat. https://t.co/Azoh2Vih7w
51 years ago, #RoeVWade made abortion care a constitutional right.
But since it was overturned, Republicans have stopped at nothing to attack our bodily autonomy.
As @ProChoiceCaucus Task Force Chair, I'll keep legislating to affirm abortion care as the human right that it is.
WE’RE SO BACK!
The green flag is up over the Rideau Canal Skateway, and a section between Fifth Ave and Bank.
The world’s largest skating rink is officially open for the start of our 54th season!

Norman Jewison. I knew the day was coming but you’re never ready. The progressive heart of so many of his films. The way he championed Canadian storytellers. Was lucky to be at the Hazelton Hotel screening room naming last Sept. His wish, use it to show Canadian films. RIP
Antisemitism on campus is a problem across North America. My colleagues and I sent a letter to the 28 largest Canadian universities asking what steps they were taking. I am pleased to report all 28 responded by our deadline. More on this in coming days.
