I just submitted an op-ed on this to Washington Post, discussing how technology cannot substitute human accountability. We must have transparency, or all the new rules and reviews create more opportunities for interference. With all due respect to one of the best referees in history I have to confront this assessment. It was technically BEFORE the goal in absolute time but not IMMEDIATELY before. It's quite a stretch of the normal logic to directly connect an accident near the goal area of one team to the action on the opposite side of the field. And since there was no arbiter's whistle to stop the game (wrong decision, agreed!), this violation cannot justify the decision to disallow the goal. And regarding the second incident in question, you are again correct stating that there was no violation of the rules against Salah, but this conclusion is reached after careful examination of the video footage from various angles. The referee during the game could not instantly verify it and considering the similarities of these two cases HAD to go to the monitor to confirm the assessment. By not doing so he simply reiterated our understanding that the game is being run by anonymous partisans behind the screens.

There is no conclusive proof. But the circumstantial evidence that there is pro-Argentina bias in FIFA affecting the World Cup:

1) In the group stage opener against Algeria, Messi caught Aïssa Mandi with a studs-up challenge on the Achilles and escaped any card. FIFA later admitted the VAR officials got it wrong and sanctioned them.

2) The inconsistency became undeniable when the United States' Folarin Balogun was sent off in the Round of 32 for a near-identical foot-on-ankle challenge on Bosnia's Tarik Muharemović. Pundits directly compared the red card to Messi's uncarded foul on Mandi.

3) In the 2026 Round of 32 against Cape Verde, referee Drew Fischer did not enforce the tournament's new rule requiring an injured player to remain off the pitch after treatment. He waited for Argentina's Nicolás Tagliafico to return before allowing a Cape Verde corner. Several uncalled fouls in that game also went Argentina's way.

4) Today against Egypt, with Egypt leading 1-0, Mostafa Ziko finished off a long breakaway to make it 2-0. VAR sent Letexier to the monitor and the goal was disallowed for a Marwan Attia shirt-pull on Lisandro Martínez that occurred roughly 20 seconds earlier and nearly the full length of the pitch from goal.

5) Neutral officiating experts, not just Egyptian fans, called the decision wrong. Former FIFA referee Mark Clattenburg said he did not believe it was a foul and did not believe VAR should have intervened at all, adding that the call was inconsistent with the physical contact referees had allowed all tournament.

6) The winning sequence produced a second grievance. In the buildup to Enzo Fernández's stoppage-time winner, Egypt appealed for a penalty on a Salah challenge and for an Alexis Mac Allister shirt-pull, and VAR checked neither. Hassan cited the unreviewed Mac Allister pull directly in his post-match remarks.

7) The 2026 grievances land on top of a 2022 record In Qatar, Argentina were awarded five penalties, the most ever by a team in a single World Cup edition, with Messi taking all five. That same tournament, Messi handled the ball against the Netherlands in the quarterfinal and escaped a yellow card.

8) FIFA has appointed an all-Argentine crew, led by Facundo Tello, for Thursday's France–Morocco quarterfinal, the tournament's first all-same-country panel.

9) Comments attributed to Infantino after an Argentina match were widely discussed as suggesting bias toward Argentina before he later clarified them, and a deep Messi run drives far more global viewership and revenue than one without him. This establishes incentive.

FIFA cannot be trusted. Egypt was robbed. Argentina are coasting to another title under FIFA protection.

OK boys hear me out. FIFA is officially registered as a non-profit organization, but it operates as a multibillion-dollar commercial powerhouse. So there is a lot of money to be made in watching rights, sponsorships, ads, tickets, and what not.

Now imagine a normal newly minted football fan. All he has heard of is Messi and Ronaldo. Now Ronaldo had no chance of making all the way to the finals (sorry CR7 fanbois even you know it is true) so that leaves just Messi. So let us all admit that the majority of the world is watching the World Cup to see Messi go all the way to the finals and probably win it. And the sooner he exits, the sooner half the planet (actually more) loses interest in football. And World Cup organizers now look at a hugely subdued profit.

So, I am not saying they rig it, but it is in the interest of FIFA, organizers, TV, sponsors, stadia etc to make sure there is Messi in the finals. And if I were running FIFA, I will rig it - make an easy path to Argentina for the finals, and do some last ten minute rigging in a match Argentina are 2-0 may be 🙃

Because let us face it. 99% of the audience is not here for a final show down between Mo Salah and Kevin De Bruyne

How that was awarded as a penalty remains a complete mystery. The contact, if any, looked minimal at best, yet the decision stood. It’s becoming harder and harder to watch the sport without feeling that the beautiful game is slowly turning into something of a joke for millions of fans around the world. The officiating has been strangely “clean” almost suspiciously so yet it leaves serious questions about consistency and impartiality.

Then there was Egypt’s goal, ruled out for reasons that still aren’t entirely clear. Why was it disallowed? In the same match, when Argentina scored their decisive goal, there appeared to be a clear foul in the build-up that neither the referee nor VAR chose to review properly. These are the moments that make supporters feel the outcome is no longer decided purely on the pitch.

There’s a growing narrative out there and it’s hard to ignore that Lionel Messi is being protected as FIFA’s golden boy. With Cristiano Ronaldo no longer part of the international scene, some believe the powers that be are determined to keep Messi’s story alive for as long as possible because his presence still drives massive global interest and viewing figures. Whether that’s true or not, the pattern of decisions in key moments only fuels that conversation.
