@BradenShamo Did they? I dont remember coming across anything where they said outright he would play just the usual song and dance around the subject being noncommittal about it. Which in all realities meant they wanted him playing but wasnt a recorded confession
@ThatARCGuy Id argue that shields as long as they are the same damaged amount. Weapons too but the likelihood of two weapons w exact durability mods etc is rather unlikely so leaving that out makes sense
@CoyoteRaider Literally if you just committed to everyone today that he would never play a down, this whole thing wouldnt be as huge a deal. Personally still think they should support him not officially tied to the team but say he is 100% permanently benched and thats what people want
@DebbieSpander@CharlieBakerMA Either they are students and they get the same treatment as every other student when it comes to school and college rules or they are not students and therefore should not be allowed association with the school at all. You cant have it both ways only when its convenient
@HitemWreckem@GoBearcatsFB There will be hate. And likely sanctions + for them. But TT is the ones currently in the driver's seat w the option to take a stand and rule him out permanently or to play word games to make sure he plays. Theyre doing the latter. That deserves the reaction they are getting
@tStocktonTTU The injunction just mandates he retain his eligibility. They cannot mandate he be employed by TT.
Also no one is saying UC shouldnt be held accountable in their own right but they are not openly willing to cross this line, just behind closed doors.
@JacobHarrisSBI The fact that they havent just fully ruled him out for the year, which is an easy sentence to say, says everything. Literally they could easily just say "hey he will not be playing for us but we are currently focused on his health" and they'd be pretty in the clear
@FBallAnalysisYT So the question really becomes do you trust your other guys enough to lock down the other half against their best guys, or would you rather take away their best and have the other guys have to cover "lesser" players across an entire field. To me its all on who that wr1
Long post incoming, because I think it’s important that someone says this…
I know and love a lot of addicts. I worked in the field at one point and I have family members who are clinicians currently working in addiction treatment.
The weaponizing of Sorsby’s addiction by Texas Tech has been disgusting, and the passage below heavily implies that TTU’s support of his recovery is dependent on him being a football player.
If TTU genuinely cared about Brendan Sorsby’s recovery they wouldn’t have waited until after a judge ruled he could play football to set these support systems up. And that’s before we even address what type of trigger a $5 million check could be for a gambling addict who supposedly gambles due to anxiety and will now feel the pressure of showing he was worth the money and backlash.
If Sorsby’s gambling is truly the manifestation of a generalized anxiety disorder as they have claimed then the least productive thing for his recovery is to turn him into a national story and a focal point for a lot of people who are rightly worried about what this means for the competitive integrity of all college sporting events.
There is a word for swooping in and fixing things for an addict so they don’t have to face the natural consequences of their actions— “ENABLING”
A player being punished for being an addict is not the same thing as him facing the natural consequences of crossing boundaries that he a) knew existed and b) took measures to circumvent.
I believe wholeheartedly in the disease model of addiction, and I have compassion for addicts who are trying to make a healthier lifestyle into a new habit. Texas Tech has created a false dichotomy that paints those supports as being dependent on Brendan’s football eligibility.
Not playing football does not equate to him being expelled from the university. These supports should never have been dependent on his being part of the team.
I don’t believe anybody at Texas Tech is actually making Brendan Sorsby’s addiction recovery the most important thing here. If they were, they never would have put him in this spot. They just want you to back off because they think it will help them win a few more games, and that part of this story feels way grosser to me than anything else.
@NathanGiese 1. Yes but TT didnt discourage him from it.
2. Not premature. If they were planning on "just supporting him" they could kick him off the team then since he's still a student use university funds or private funding to assist him with his recovery efforts as a non football student
@DanIsett If you actually for a second believe Paxton is doing this out of any belief that its moral or right do I have some ocean front property in Arizona for you. Hes as corrupt as it gets and in the middle of a political race hes projected to lose. Its all about PR for him
@mortimoresays@5thDownCFB Finally to your Cincy point, they do deserve sanctions and punishment for their role, but theirs is a past engagement, when there was no public knowledge. Give them the SMU kiss of death punishment if they really knew. This is pandoras box whether people like it or not
@mortimoresays@5thDownCFB Option 2 is still an option. You made a bad investment. Its on you to eat that loss and tuck your tail. Why do you want to bail out a billionaire over taking a proper moral stance.
The wrongness here is a moral/ethical wrongness that has all sports wide implications
@mortimoresays@5thDownCFB Option 1 isnt an argument. TT isnt under obligation to employ him. The ruling just says hes eligible to play, not mandated to play where he is now. Yes thered probably be some civil suit over that but you accept that.
@CottonCC_FFSN Do you really want to open this Pandoras box? Theres no putting it back if you let this happen. Every sport is opened up to players/coaches/etc betting on their own games w no real way for anyone to know if something is rigged or not
@gwilkie80@dannykanell They could easily commit to supporting him while also firmly stating he is banned for life from all athletics activities. Those two things are mutually exclusive stances.
@Mister_Root Theres no law or rule they have broken but that doesnt make what they are doing right, ethical or in the best interest of the sports world as a whole. Theres many things that arent technically illegal but are societally governed as unacceptable behaviors
@mortimoresays@5thDownCFB Thats right and Texh could have told Soraby if he fought the decision he was no longer welcome at their university. Stop pretending TT has not option but to just accept this whole thing as is
@Aaron_Torres He doesnt deserve to play sports again.
Yes there are worse things morally that you can do. But for 150+ years there has been a singular giant chasm that cannot be crossed, which was betting on your own team or even sport. That action deserves the most severe punishment possible
