The Managing Director of East African Medical Vitals (EAMV) @EAMedicalVitals Mr. Brian Kavuuya, addressed delegates, highlighting EAMV's pioneering role as Africa's first manufacturer of surgical gloves. Founded in 2016 by Legacy Group, Asigma Capital, and VVSAOL Investments, EAMV's inception coincided with the COVID-19 pandemic.
The pandemic exposed Africa's vulnerability, as the continent struggled to access medical supplies and consumables. Moreover, the quality of gloves available in Africa and Sub-Saharan Africa fell short of European standards. Notably, there is no international criterion for testing and accrediting sterility.
To address these challenges, @EAMedicalVitals is dedicated to:
- Sourcing high-quality raw materials
- Implementing a rigorous manufacturing process
- Providing Ugandan health professionals with surgical gloves that meet international standards
@EAMedicalVitals has achieved ISO certification and UK-based certification, demonstrating its commitment to quality. The company plans to conduct a health professionals' survey to gather feedback on their products. #ASOUConference2025

Dr. Francis Basimbe highlighted the traditional apprenticeship model in endoscopy training, sharing his own experience of learning from the late Prof. Kakande.
He emphasized the need for structured training options beyond apprenticeship, including:
1. Simulation models – Providing a controlled and reproducible training environment.
2. Animal simulation models – Allowing for hands-on practice before working with patients.
He discussed a training program using Fujifilm-based sensor simulations, which:
-Recruited multiple trainees.
-Provided a stress-free learning environment.
-Allowed trainees to experience and navigate complications safely before encountering them in real cases.
Dr. Francis Basimbe concluded by posing a critical question:
Should Ugandan surgery system adopt simulation-based training as the standard for endoscopy education?#ASOUConference2025

Thanks @ASOU_Official for the platform. Prevalence of Syphilis in all age groups is an area to look out for. The higher prevalence of HIV among the young adults mirroring national statistics is also a concern. Why are young people acquiring HIV despite the awareness?
