@mbdbaggett It seems useful to ask WHY some people want special groups for racial minorities and why other people want whites-only groups.
I've heard the rhetoric in CT, GC, and World for providing minority-only spaces, and I've heard whites-only Christian rhetoric.
It's VERY different.
@mbdbaggett Ah, the people who told us "we're not electing a pastor" to justify supporting an adulterer who boasted of grabbing women by the [.....] are suddenly deeply concerned about the theological qualifications of candidates for office.
@geekyguyjay@jdgreear@JJ_Denhollander@R_Denhollander If I had known then what I knew now about the secrets they were either protecting or joining in the effort to change the subject away from Pressler, Patterson, et al, I would never have bothered to argue with them. They have hardened their hearts against reason and against God.
@geekyguyjay@jdgreear@JJ_Denhollander@R_Denhollander I have a long record of defending the classical Christian teaching that gay sex is wrong. But that isn't good enough. I've been attached again and again by Baptists who were simultaneously protecting powerful Baptist pedophiles. I used to try to argue with them.
I gave up.
@geekyguyjay@jdgreear@JJ_Denhollander@R_Denhollander I agree that's it's impossible to shut down. These critics are either evil or stupid. Thousands of hours have gone into researching and laying out the evidence against Pressler, Patterson, the Executive Committee, hundreds of Baptist parties who are abusers. They won't listen.
@HacVale@Where_Peter_is This article, linked in the original, provides a much shorter summary of the argument.
Essentially, English translations of the 1986 letter leave out a word present in the Latin original and most other translations of the Letter.

@roddreher Rod, you're a Christian writer, and through most of my adult life you have been a Christian public figure. Is using your platform to mock some poor messed up old woman a good use of that platform? Is this how Jesus would respond to this woman?
@evetushnet @OneMadMomBlog It seems your critics are assuming a picture book is bad compared to a normal dissertation book, then assuming you're being insulting by pointing it out, and calling you out for doing so.
It was clear to me you were saying the picture book is cooler, & not insulting the author.
@BenJDConroy I'm not a consequentialist, and I'm not trying to justify horrors like area bombing or Hiroshima. But if I see a car come across the center line in front of me, the decisions I make in the next few seconds are probably all non-ideal, but lots of things are better than a head-on.
@BenJDConroy The action has objective moral worth. But there are situations where you have to choose the lesser of two evils. And then it's relevant to consider the alternatives the actor faced.
A bad choice in the face of worse choices is better than a bad one with better options available.
@BMcGrewvy ... something I said years ago at Spiritual Friendship and something Bekah Mason said at Revoice years later is somehow worth remarking on. In fact, there are quite large disagreements among different people lumped under that label, and you seem to miss that.
@BMcGrewvy 2) You want to draw a strong distinction between your own views and those of Courage leadership, even though your overall philosophy is similar. But then you seem to think that "side b" individuals march in such tight lock step that a slight inconsistency between...
@BMcGrewvy You claim in your reply that you've previously criticized Dan, but a search of your blog shows no prior articles that validate your claim, and your article contains no links that would show that you've done this.
@BMcGrewvy But then I think you need to grapple with the fact that Harvey was covering up abuse before he founded Courage and Dan seems to have had abuse in his past throughout his entire career writing about why he didn't call himself gay.
