@CraigMayhem @stevesilberman ... until I was 12 & started to ask why. By then, she had drilled the habit permanently into me. I still utilize it, even though I have dropped all the other masking that she kept pushing.

I can't confront her because of her dementia, but at least I am free to be myself now. 2/2

My mother, a doctor, taught me how to fake eye contact when I was three and repeatedly stressed the importance of that skill ... 1/2

An acquaintance just moved from Eastern US to Western Canada. They (parents & kids) were used to Metal detectors, verified ID, prior apptmnts to enter their kids' school, etc.
