Fun to write about DAOs in the context of what we know about organizations already. How are they different to corporations and other online communities? s/o @Dr_DAO_@daomastersxyz
1/ Coordination is critical to any DAO. It separates those that succeed vs. those that fall apart.
Well-run DAOs will balance corp and community practices to succeed. Here's why. 🧵

@joulee Love this! A related tip is making the strawman as short and simple as possible. It means everyone actually reads/understands it, and focuses the conversation on the core assumptions vs. debates on framing, language, or other window dressing
@girdley@CoffeeToro In the "classic drinks", to make it easier to read you might group the coffee based ones together and then the flavoured ones together. E.g., "Latte/Cap; Americano; Brewed" THEN "Mocha; Caramel..." etc.
@girdley Or more specifically like teenage sex... everyone talks about doing it, but nobody really knows how to do it, and everyone thinks everyone else is doing it...
@ballmatthew Beyond the whole gaming sector sky rocketing (totally agree), do you think any segments hold better strategic positions? E.g., developers vs publishers vs platforms, etc.?
@patrick_oshag@modestproposal1 Great ep! Love the idea of developing standardised q's to ask guests about a specific business. Also interested in:
- What's the most important substitute to this product?
- What is the most promising growth opportunity?
- What's the most common misconception about this biz?
@mgirdley Airlines... "The worst sort of business is one that grows rapidly, requires significant capital to engender the growth, and then earns little or no money.” - Buffett
@MinvstrD@patrick_oshag To this point, I wonder whether accelerating is the right thing to do at other stages of the business - like very early or very mature?
I think there is merit to slowing down, at times.
From court filings this evening: Tiktok spent over $1B on ads on Facebook, Instagram, and Snapchat to acquire users. This is extraordinary scale for a paid user acquisition program to acquire users from competitive products.
@patrick_oshag Stitch Fix’s data on customer retail preferences.
By the way, beyond “hard to copy” you might also care about substitutability (eg, it’s hard to copy Chipotle’s fresh food supply chain but it’s easy to substitute a burrito with other food)
1/ Thread: The role of intangibles in valuation
I feel like a broken record, but @mjmauboussin and Dan Callahan recently published another intriguing piece titled "One Job".
What is "One Job"?
To take advantage of gaps between expectations and fundamentals.
But first a quiz.
