I’ll be speaking at Progress Conference this year, on What Progress Has There Been in Education? (Ever, so 6th c. BCE to present.)

Most importantly I’ll be there to hang out. Come!

[Alicia, Courtyard Urbanist @UrbanCourtyard]

I'm really looking forward to joining all these great speakers at the 2026 Progress Conference in Berkeley (October)

I love that that progress movement is focusing on the question of how we make it easier to build the future

For me, that question starts with cities. We need urban housing, neighborhoods, and development models that are compatible with rising living standards and family life.

Can’t wait to be part of this conversation.

Our speaker list is now closed—we’ve started a list for 2027—and we’re excited about lots of attendee-organized sessions too.

This is the third annual progress conference, and we received well over 700 applications to attend, more than any other year so far. Our open application window is now closed and the conference will be sold out any day.

With this much interest, it’s clear that the progress movement is growing. There’s more than enough excited, passionate people to fill multiple conferences, workshops, regional events, and so on. We’ll keep working to build the progress community, and we hope to partner with more organizations to create more in-person gatherings.

[Jason Crawford @jasoncrawford]

Jefferson in 1826 (declining, for health reasons, an invitation to an America's 50th celebration):

“I should, indeed, with peculiar delight, have met and exchanged there congratulations personally with the small band, the remnant of that host of worthies, who joined with us on that day, in the bold and doubtful election we were to make for our country, between submission or the sword; and to have enjoyed with them the consolatory fact, that our fellow citizens, after half a century of experience and prosperity, continue to approve the choice we made.

“May it be to the world, what I believe it will be, (to some parts sooner, to others later, but finally to all), the Signal of arousing men to burst the chains, under which monkish ignorance and superstition had persuaded them to bind themselves, and to assume the blessings & security of self-government. That form which we have substituted, restores the free right to the unbounded exercise of reason and freedom of opinion.

“All eyes are opened, or opening, to the rights of man. The general spread of the light of science has already laid open to every view the palpable truth, that the mass of mankind has not been born with saddles on their backs, nor a favored few booted and spurred, ready to ride them legitimately, by the grace of god.

“These are grounds of hope for others. For ourselves, let the annual return of this day forever refresh our recollections of these rights, and an undiminished devotion to them.”
