Japan signals a powerful message as tensions with China rise over Taiwan.

Tokyo says it will be the first to step in if Taiwan faces a military strike from China. Japan is moving medium range missiles to Yonaguni Island only one hundred ten kilometers from Taiwan as part of a major defense boost aimed at deterring Beijing.

I’m from the Northeast - so when I say this, I mean it with heart and history.

Prema Thongdok (originally from Rupa, West Kameng district, Arunachal Pradesh) was en route from London to Japan, transiting via Shanghai, when she was held 18 hours by Chinese authorities simply because her Indian passport listed Arunachal Pradesh as her birthplace.

They told her: “Arunachal Pradesh is part of China - your passport is invalid.” They even mocked her: “You should get a Chinese passport.”

Here’s the deal:
•Arunachal Pradesh is undeniably Indian territory and Indian citizens born there have full right to Indian passports

•And it undermines the very “normalcy” Beijing claims to want at LAC.

•Chinese interference in civilian transit and identity is not diplomacy - it’s intimidation.

•India lodged a strong demarche in Beijing & Delhi - reminding China that this detention was baseless and breached the Chicago Convention & Montreal Convention on civil aviation.

When a citizen from our Northeast is singled out just for their birthplace - that’s not foreign policy. That’s erasure.

In just the past six days, Hindu temples and idols were attacked in #Kushtia and #Gazipur.

In Kushtia’s Mirpur Upazila, idols of Kartik, Saraswati, and others were vandalised last Sunday evening at the Rakshakali Mandir in Poradoho Union’s Sharupdaha Palpara area. The assailants even took away the CCTV cameras before fleeing. No arrests have been made in connection with this religiously motivated attack.

A similar incident occurred in Gazipur’s Kashimpur, where a Puja venue was attacked and idols vandalised. Initially, the local police station’s Officer-in-Charge dismissed it as “damage caused by heavy winds.” Only after public backlash was a case eventually filed. See:

Since Durga Puja preparations began this year, Hindu temples and idols have come under attack in at least seven districts: Panchagarh, Faridpur, Madaripur, Gaibandha, Kushtia, Netrokona, and Gazipur.

“We have received reports of idol vandalism from several districts. Yet despite these repeated incidents, police and the government are not taking the issue seriously. They show no commitment to stopping these attacks,” said Manindra Kumar Nath, president of Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Oikya Parishad (BHBCOP), the country’s largest minority rights group.

Nath also criticised recent remarks by Interim Govt Home Adviser Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, who derided puja venues as “dens of alcohol and cannabis.”
