This term I’m in an Oregon State reading group called ETRE (Engineers That Read with ETRE). We are reading @ruha9’s Race After Technology and I will be reflecting on the book, our group’s conversations, my attempt at understanding, and applications to my life/research here!
Last but not least, completing the expansion of our Programs Committee, we have Marius Wiggert, @ojakintande, Samuel King, Shiva Madadkhani, @UtkarshaAgwan & @varchanaiyer_. Welcome to the team @ClimateChangeAI core team!
I present my masters research: On the Role of Spatial Clustering in Building Species Distribution Models with Community Science Data
Tomorrow! 4-5pm CST. Come learn why my title is so long and about methods to help birds (+more). Details & zoom link here: https://t.co/ZBIKnuCPMn
never seems far from thought. That’s not to say that the ecology domain always transfers its learnings on diversity to domains outside of ecosystems (i.e., human ecosystems). As always, excited to read on!

In Chapter 1 of #RAT, @ruha9 brings into focus the concern of singularity in developing an artificial intelligence system, “…is there only one theory of mind, and whose mind is it modeled on?” I hadn’t considered this before, but I am starting to see examples everywhere —

Bc of this, I reflected on and appreciated the fact that I do research in an environmental space bc of how central the value of (bio)diversity is to many ecosystems. There are many examples of the negative consequences of singularity to environments and this fact

1 thing that stood out in #RAT’s Introduction was the choice to highlight ‘thin description’, an approach that counters the better known methodology, thick description. A thick description attempts to understand an action by injecting an abundance of context and factual [1/N]
surpass the way they understand themselves, is spot on. I am curious if Benjamin chooses thin description to also analyze the construction of these algorithms bc it seems like thin description may benefit the developer by providing them some distance from

Check out my research on improving Species Distribution Models with spatial clustering!
I am lucky to share my work as a part of this super cool workshop @ icml
