MIT students got bored on a Saturday night and turned an entire building into a playable game of Tetris, rigging every window with LEDs at midnight.
These kids are going to run the world and we should let them.
As we move into longer days in the Northern Hemisphere, the increase in solar exposure is not just a seasonal convenience, it is a biologically relevant shift in environmental pressure. It is, therefore, a good moment to revisit how organisms have evolved to handle ultraviolet radiation.
At the planetary level, protection begins before photons even reach the skin. The ozone layer acts as a selective filter, absorbing most UVC and a substantial fraction of UVB radiation. This filtering is critical: UVC, in particular, is highly energetic and directly mutagenic. Without this atmospheric barrier, the burden of DNA damage at the surface would be incompatible with complex life as we know it.
What remains—primarily UVA and some UVB—is sufficient to exert continuous biological pressure. And here is where the earlier statement requires nuance.
All forms of electromagnetic radiation are not equivalent in biological exposure over evolutionary timescales. Ultraviolet radiation has been a persistent, surface-level selective force since early life emerged, particularly after the formation of the ozone layer allowed stable terrestrial ecosystems. In contrast, X-rays and gamma rays are far less constant at the organismal level—largely attenuated by the atmosphere and encountered sporadically (cosmic events, geological sources).
This distinction matters.
Evolution does not respond to what exists, but to what is consistently experienced. As a result, UV radiation has driven the development of dual protective strategies:
- The first is anticipatory: a physical and chemical shield. Melanin, synthesised by melanocytes and distributed to keratinocytes, acts as a broadband UV absorber. Its molecular structure allows it to dissipate absorbed energy as harmless heat, effectively reducing the photon flux reaching nuclear DNA. This is not repair—it is prevention, a pre-emptive attenuation of damage, a probabilistic defence.
- The second is corrective, and far more precise. Cells deploy nucleotide excision repair (NER), a highly conserved mechanism specialised in recognising helix-distorting lesions. Damage recognition proteins scan the genome for structural irregularities, excise a short single-stranded DNA segment containing the lesion, and resynthesise the correct sequence using the undamaged strand as a template.
These two layers reflect fundamentally different evolutionary strategies: Melanin reduces the probability of damage occurring; NER reduces the consequence when it inevitably does.
Together, they form a coupled system of defence—one statistical, one molecular—designed not to eliminate risk, but to manage it within tolerable biological limits.
A typical swipe yet totally off target u don’t know OBVIOUSLY as he’s doing something far better than any other nation country or other billionaire making a mark on given big back and putting us n it’s ALL OF US
So instead of mocking my Elon try thanking him for having a go ABD makong a real difference for us all has to B THANKED TRUSTED treated better.

"The overall goal of my companies is to maximize the future of civilization. Basically maximize the probability that civilization has a great future and to expand consciousness beyond Earth. Take SpaceX for example, that SpaceX is about advancing rocket technology to the point where we can extend life & consciousness beyond Earth to the moon, to Mars, eventually to other star systems. I think we should always view consciousness as we know it as precarious & delicate, because to the best of our knowledge, we don't know of life anywhere else."
