WORD

[Omid Djalili @omid9]

“Iran is not a chessboard for your ideological battles. Our suffering is not yours to interpret to fit your politics. If you genuinely care about human rights and the Iranian people, start by listening to us, even when our voices challenge your ideology.”

Many have not listened. Fact is you can speak over Iranian voices and spew your bile over western media. That’s free speech. But it comes with consequences. The very tales you spin are narratives that keep a regime in power that continue to execute innocent protesters, some as young as 17, at a rate of 6 a day.

The investigation obtained secretly recorded footage of elected Reform officials across England and Wales using violent, racist and sexist language, including calling Muslims “parasites” and describing black children as “animals”.

What a lovely tribute to a remarkable man.

I heard the news a few hours ago, and I am still absorbing it. Dear Benon Sevan whose “good morning” texts I had grown so used to receiving that, perhaps, I took them for granted. You are up there in heaven now, reunited with our mutual friend Abdul Haq. Two men whose influence on my life, and on the course it took, cannot be measured.

I met you when I was 19, a feisty, bright-eyed, bushy-tailed intern at the UN in New York. You treated everyone, from the janitor to the Russian ambassador (Lavrov then), to the Secretary General (who’d eventually stab you in the back) with the same respect, warmth and deference. I’ll always remember that about you.

In October 2001, I passed through New York, and you made time to have breakfast with me. You knew I was covering Afghanistan closely then. The name of our mutual friend came up, and you asked when I had last heard from him. You seemed concerned. Days later, we learned that he had been captured, and later, killed.

We kept in touch over the years. Everywhere I went throughout my career, I would come across people who knew you and invariably, they had a story about you and such fond memories.

For a little Armenian girl from the suburbs of Montreal, you were a pathfinder. You opened a window onto an international career and passed on that hunger for a front row view to history unfolding.

We stayed in touch over the years. You came to my wedding in Nicosia. You never forgot my birthday. You always checked in, commented on my silly social media posts, and called from time to time to share your insights about that part of the world we both cared so much about.

The news of your death was a shock. And perhaps the hardest thing to accept is that I never told you what an impact you had on my life. I hope you knew.

Thank you, Benon. For your kindness, your wisdom, your friendship and above all for the inspiring life you led.

Rest in peace, dear friend. You will be missed and remembered always. 💔

Well done, Zia jan, for your dogged determination to interview Benon. It turned out to be his last interview.
I’ve just heard that dear Benon passed away yesterday. Thank you for being the reason I got to see him one last time.

I traveled to Cyprus, to sit down with former UN envoy, Benon Sevan for a conversation about the final days of ex pres Najibullah. Sevan recalls the last attempts to get him out, the political rivalries & why he still believes the UN could have done more.

Mounting #debts forced him to sell #inherited land — and cost him the trust of those who once helped him prosper. A cautionary tale on credit. New #DailyHustle by @AANafgh's @HamidPakte69477 & @roxbox2

A bitter-sweet account of her life by a young woman forced to live it online. My goodness, #Afghan women can be formidable...

I have only just learned that my old friend Dr Zafar Paiman died earlier this year. I can’t quite believe I didn’t know. A distinguished Afghan archaeologist, Zafar devoted much of his life to uncovering & documenting Afghanistan’s extraordinary pre-Islamic and Buddhist heritage.

Rest in Power

I hate August. It’s difficult reliving the past & the awful days 5 years ago. It’s 1 September. Don’t look away from Afghanistan. Afghanistan is not just for one month a year. Afghans are living every day with the fallout of choices that were made in their name — and in yours.

There will never be a more iconic entrance. Tim Curry, you will never be forgotten. 💔

[ྐ❤︎ @traumadumpling]

the “i’m going home” scene in The Rocky Horror Picture Show hits even harder now. r.i.p Tim Curry. you were such a formative part of so many of our introductions to theatre, film, and everything weird and wonderful in between 🪽

The way Kenny Rogers’ whole face lights up the moment he hears Dolly Parton’s voice coming from offstage.

I have always loved this performance so much.

[The Royal Family @RoyalFamily]

Remembering the late, great Dolly, who brought joy, comfort and inspiration to so many - including the millions of children given free books through her Imagination Library. We will always ❤️ you.

[Just Rock Content @JustRockContent]

One of the all-time great Rock Hall moments: Dolly’s “Jolene” with Rob Halford (Judas Priest), Pat Benatar, Annie Lennox, Simon Le Bon (Duran Duran), Pink, and Sheryl Crow. Zac Brown Band held it down as the house band.

Rest easy, Dolly 🤘

[UN Special Rapporteur Richard Bennett @SR_Afghanistan]

A year ago, we warned against the normalisation of Taliban rule. We repeat that warning today with greater urgency, because the temptation to normalise has grown while the grounds to justify it have not. Normalising a regime that systematically persecutes more than half of its population does not promote change; it legitimises oppression.

The guy who delightedly claimed to bring down Jason Arday, Nathan Cofnas, had his own work demolished as “unintelligible, wrong-headed …nonsensical” by nine more senior academics two years before Cambridge appointed him. He has argued that universities like Cambridge would have virtually zero Black professors if appointed solely on merit (which, funnily enough, is more or less what the supposedly ‘woke” Cambridge in fact has). He argues that Black people can only excel in sport and entertainment. A strangely under-covered aspect of this sad story https://t.co/rZ40w2dzvO
