I struggled with this at the beginning of my PhD research. I've been studying other people's data, using methods other people have developed--I'm not going to be the "first" in anything. The best I can hope to achieve is to provide another perspective.

@SaraLUckelman Oh weird! yeah, I feel like gouache you can only dilute it so far before it doesn't look good.

@SaraLUckelman Sure, I've just never had a reason to switch them up since I use acrylics on canvas/wood/clay and gouache on paper/parchment. I find when you dilute gouache it gets splotchy, like you'd expect with watercolors, but acrylic goes on smooth even when translucent.

@SaraLUckelman I wouldn't say that I like acrylic over gouache, I just use them both very differently. I also used to use professional grade water-based acrylics, which you could still uplift with water, or paint over depending on the effect you wanted.

@SaraLUckelman It really depends on what I'm painting. I used to use acrylics for large pieces (A2+) and loved how I could build opaque layers over washes, and the texture was great for colored pencils or charcoals. Or I could build it up thick and actually stick stuff into it.
