Beyond Vinchu Kata: The Ancient Jain Brāhmī Heritage of Lohagad:
Found Jain Brāhmī script dated to the 2nd or 1st century B.C., is one of the earliest known pieces of evidence for Jainism in western India. The inscription begins with the Jain invocation "Namo Arahaṁtānaṁ" and has attracted considerable scholarly attention since its discovery in 2019².
In recent times, 'Lohagad Fort' near Lonavala has been in the news following the tragic death of 'Ketan Agarwal' at the famous 'Vinchu Kata (Scorpion's Tail Ridge)'. While the incident drew widespread public attention, few are aware that this historic fort also preserves a remarkable chapter of India's ancient past.
Near Lohagadwadi, at the foot of Lohagad Fort, lies a group of ancient rock-cut caves. During the reign of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, both the fort and these caves are believed to have been used for storing war treasures, including the wealth brought from the Surat campaign¹.
Among these excavations, Cave No. 7 is of exceptional historical importance. An inscription engraved near the entrance of the cave, written in Jain Brāhmī script and dated to the 2nd or 1st century B.C., is one of the earliest known pieces of evidence for Jainism in western India. The inscription begins with the Jain invocation "Namo Arahaṁtānaṁ" and has attracted considerable scholarly attention since its discovery in 2019².
These inscriptions are of immense archaeological and epigraphic significance, shedding light on the early spread of Jainism in western India.
> Our ongoing research suggests that the mountainous tracts of the Konkan region may have been associated with the domain of Nannan, the celebrated philanthropic ruler praised in ancient Tamil Sangam literature. If this hypothesis is valid, the discovery of these early Jain Brāhmī inscriptions assumes even greater historical significance and raises an intriguing academic question worthy of further interdisciplinary investigation³.
'Can experts in ancient Tamil-Brāhmī inscriptions and South Indian epigraphy from Tamil Nadu undertake a comparative study of these Jain Brāhmī inscriptions?'
Such collaborative research may offer valuable insights into the development of early Brāhmī scripts, the spread of Jainism, and the cultural interactions that connected different regions of ancient India.
'Our archaeological heritage deserves not only preservation but also deeper interdisciplinary study.'
