Our Founder & CEO @piyushtewarii speaks with @PTI_News about the genesis of SaveLIFE Foundation and how we catalysed a nationwide movement that culminated in India's landmark Good Samaritan Law—protecting bystanders who assist road crash victims from legal harassment.
This work deepened our understanding of road safety as a multifaceted public health challenge requiring holistic intervention. The stakes are staggering: India loses approximately 3% of its GDP annually to road crashes alone, representing an immense cumulative economic toll from these daily tragedies that disproportionately affect lower-income communities and the most productive age group of 18-45 years.
At @wef 2026, @savelifeindia will spotlight our 'Made-in-India' road safety model—one grounded in the lived realities of vulnerable road users and communities most affected by crashes. This approach has achieved significant results, such as reducing road crashes by 30-60 percent on some of India's highest-risk corridors. We're confident this model holds significant potential for application across other lower- and middle-income countries facing similar challenges.

(1/2) The close of another year renews our conviction in our mission, sharpens our resolve, and energises us for the work that lies ahead. 🛣️
Over the past year, it has become even clearer that road crashes constitute a pressing public health challenge—one that can be addressed successfully with science-based interventions grounded in the four Es: engineering, education, enforcement, and emergency care. Our evidence for the same would have meant little if it wasn’t rooted in empathy. Our model works because it foregrounds the lived realities of vulnerable road users—pedestrians, cyclists, motorcyclists, children, and people with disabilities.
Every day, more data comes in that shows our work is delivering results. A consistent year-on-year reduction in crashes, fatal crashes, and fatalities across India’s high-risk highways and expressways underscores that this model works. These outcomes are all the more significant given that India records nearly five lakh road crashes annually, resulting in an estimated 3% loss of GDP, as noted by the Hon. Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Shri Nitin Gadkari. The road to Viksit Bharat, therefore, must be one with zero road crash fatalities.
2025 wouldn’t have been half as fulfilling without our wonderful partners, both from the government and the private sector, donors, collaborators, and friends from the media. Their belief in our mission brings immense value to the work we do every day. When our patience thins, their confidence in our work makes the difficult days seem worth it. When we’re riding high on a milestone, they gently nudge us to keep our eyes on the larger goal: saving 1 million lives by 2030, lives that will be lost if we don’t institutionalise scientific improvements in our road infrastructure, trauma care framework, and policy ecosystem.

Collaboration with the MP Government is an important step toward translating proven road safety strategies into lasting impact on the ground. We aim to build local capacity, apply data-led solutions, and co-create models that can drastically reduce road crash fatalities.

SaveLIFE Foundation recently launched a community engagement initiative in Unnao district, #UttarPradesh, aimed at raising awareness about the importance of road safety.
This initiative formed part of our Tactical Urbanism (TU) trial in the district's Dahi Chowki intersection — a first of its kind in Uttar Pradesh — which is set to kick off today. TU trials by SaveLIFE Foundation aim to enhance road safety and reduce fatalities in areas with high traffic volumes.
As part of our community engagement initiative, targeted workshops were held with three key groups: students, professional drivers, and local residents.
Approximately 100 students, aged 18 to 22, participated in a road safety-themed quiz at the Government Polytechnic Unnao. A dedicated session was also organised with 40 drivers from the Uttar Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation @UPSRTCHQ, during which they were told about the safety interventions in TU and their usage.
A community meeting was held at the local panchayat, where 25 residents were informed about the safety measures implemented at the Dahi Chowki intersection. They were also educated on best practices for safe road navigation, equipping the community with the knowledge to make informed decisions and travel more safely.
