What legal tools exist to protect Alberta’s native grasslands, and where are the gaps?
This webinar examines the complex network of laws, regulations, and policies that influence grassland conservation and land-use decisions across the province.
Topics discussed include:
@RjSigurdson Thank you for the support however can we please address the current shortcomings with s19 of the Water Act; I’d like to pass my family operation to my children and s19 is not protective of family ranches; please reopen TAR so all missed producers can fall under s24.
Alberta’s native grasslands are among the most threatened ecosystems in Canada — but they also play a critical role in biodiversity, wildlife habitat, carbon storage, and sustainable land management.
In our recent webinar, we explored:
Soil biodiversity drives the carbon, nitrogen and water cycles upon which life on earth depends.
🍃 #Sustainable land management practices and sustainably managing agricultural landscapes can preserve soil #biodiversity.

Cows are the original recyclers ♻️. They turn grass we can’t eat into milk, meat, fertilizer & even energy. Superheroes in disguise? 🐄

Pulled two cows out of our purebred herd to start a commercial herd.
As a Hereford kid - my eyes aren’t used to the colour yet - but using some Sitz genetics with the Henrietta Pride line to build our foundation.
Hoping for a nice herd for the kids to take over one day.
@Davembmd Agreed. AI is best used as a tool by experienced professionals who are capable to build ML models and then provide critical review of results.
You need both.
I’m worried about young people bypassing the fundamental steps of knowledge acquisition with AI at their fingertips.
@TKRanch Concern I have been raising with our MLA is the incomplete Trad Ag water diversion registry. Majority of producers in our area never registered in 1999/2001. Government won’t reopen. So in our area >90% of AG users aren’t accounted for in these project assessments.
📣 Today's the day! Tune in at 2pm ET to catch Olivia Richardson & Talha Awan's talk on the importance of #Grasslands in Prairie climate adaptation 🌾
@TKRanch You can check and see if you have a Traditional Agriculture registration here. This registry covers surface water and groundwater diversions. If you don’t have one, you are marginally covered under s19 as long as you resided on land prior 1999: https://t.co/2tsZtCwjFL
@TKRanch I am only aware as we have developers surrounding us and I did some digging.
If you know anyone in the same boat (i.e., don’t have a Trad Ag registry but were on land prior to 1999 - please have them reach out to Farmers Advocate).
@TKRanch No. SW of Calgary.
I reached out to Farmers Advocate to see if I can get some traction. Most people aren’t even aware. I’ve met one lady at an RDAR workshop who even knew about the program.
@TKRanch That we fall under s.19 of the Water Act (exempted ag user) however s.19 doesn’t include heirs; does not quantify water diversion volumes for projects/cumulative effects assessment and does not have FITFIR.
Canada lost 5M acres of farmland in 5 years. That's 3% of our agricultural land base. 🇨🇦
Healthy soil = food security, clean water & climate stability. This affects ALL Canadians.
