@chinnychick My heart always sinks when anyone in government (national or local) spouts “lessons will be learnt”. Having worked in or with the public sector for my whole career the least read folders are those badged “lessons to be learnt”.

@WarMonitor3 Maternal grandfather served in Malta throughout the war in the coastal artillery. (My grandmother and mother were with him the whole time.) My paternal grandfather was in a reserved occupation and was an ARP warden in Ilford.

@hw97karbine @MilHistNow My mother & grandparents were in the Malta during the war. (Grandad was in the coastal artillery.) Mum used to recall Italians bombing from up high, Germans from down low, & also sheltering in the tunnels with a wet handkerchief over her face to keep dust out from the concussions

@RealAirPower1 I’m pretty sure I read a story of a takeoff to height challenge where the EE Lightning beat the F15. Can’t recall the detail but the Lightning was stripped back to “clean”. F15 started well but was overtaken by the Lightning, though it was apparently on fumes when it landed!

@WatchingNow12 @ron_eisele Early spitfires, up to MkV if I recall correctly, had the water radiator under the starboard wing and oil cooler under the port. From MkIX extra radiator capacity for, I think, the intercooler, meant scoop style radiators under both wings.

@MarkUrban01 I was 6 when Apollo 11 achieved the first landing and 9 when 17 did the last. I remember 8 and the first time humans left earth and orbited the moon. I was hooked on space from then and even then recognised the quality of the BBC’s team. Sadly Wednesday’s didn’t quite match up.
