RSTCON 2025 - What Data Tells Us About How Apts Attack Critical Infrastructure - Ymir Vigfusson
RSTCON is an annual technical security conference aimed at resetting our focus to cutting-edge research, exploitation, and tradecraft targeting the sensors, systems, and architectures utilized by critical industry.
Ymir Vigfusson examines how state-sponsored APT groups have stepped up attacks on U.S. critical infrastructure over the past 18 months, not only increasing breach volume but also shifting their strategic goals. He breaks down the most common TTP's these adversaries use, reveals where traditional defenses fall short, and shares practical detection points and countermeasures organizations can implement now.
Ymir Vigfusson, PhD is the CTO and co-founder of Keystrike, a cybersecurity company born from his research as an Associate Professor of Computer Science at Emory University. A reformed hacker (whose teenage shenanigans included developing some of the first format-string exploits and coining the term "anti-security") and systems builder, Ymir previously co-founded the penetration testing company Syndis and cybersecurity education company Adversary. His research has been supported by the NSF, the CDC, RANNIS, and others.

In this talk, Joshua Satterfield dives into the ongoing battle of Android malware obfuscation, demonstrating how attackers use increasingly sophisticated techniques and how analysts can defeat them. He walks through a custom malware sample he created for the talk, showing different obfuscation methods and how to bypass them statically before dissecting a real world sample using dynamic analysis.
Joshua is a full-time reverse engineer with over five years of experience in technology, including software-defined radio, Windows development, and mobile malware analysis. A longtime CTF player and hobbyist reverse engineer, he transitioned to full-time malware analysis work in 2024.
