No one was using Stripe's stablecoin payout product when it first launched.

"When we launched the product, it hardly was used. No one was using it."

"What do I do with USDC in Vietnam? What do I do with it in Ghana? I need to buy groceries, coffee, and local things for my family."

"This was the spark for me launching Latitude. I do not have the thesis that a US dollar stablecoin will be used by everyone in the world."

Latitude settles stablecoin payouts into local currency across 50+ countries.

"We can pay out the Philippines to Mexico to India all in under two minutes, all in real time."

Uber has built one of the most sophisticated cross-border payments operations on the planet.

Yet paying their drivers in emerging markets still costs 2-3%.

"That's meaningful to an Uber driver."

"The first way, if you wanna pay internationally, is Swift. You send a wire equivalent through Swift, and it gets to the destination market several days later and for a lot of fees."

"You've got to plan that payment in advance because it's expensive. Uber's not trying to do that every day."

The card networks responded with solutions like Visa Direct and Mastercard Send, which let you push a payment directly to a worker's card.

"But while it's instant in some markets, the adoption in emerging markets is scarce, and it's expensive. You can be paying two or 3%."

Stablecoins move globally, but payouts need to land locally. That's why we're backing @rtp as they work to connect settlement to local rails, so people can get paid in their local currency in minutes, and without needing a crypto wallet.

[Stabledash @stabledash]

"The only thing stopping us from succeeding is our execution ability." — @cyril_mathew, Co-Founder & CEO of @rtp

How do they solve it?

"We're literally getting referrals from a lot of the wallet providers, a lot of the L1 blockchains."

"Clients want to use our wallets or get live on said blockchain, but they lack off-ramps in all these markets."

"And they're coming to us, Latitude, can you solve it? We heard you're moving fast."

[Stabledash @stabledash]

San Francisco's taxi market was worth $200 million in 2009. In under seven years, Uber grew it to $2 billion.

Cyril says there is a lot to be learnt from Uber's growth for the future of stablecoin payments.

"If you make it so much easier to do cross-border payments with stablecoins but still get out to local currencies, just thinking about the current TAM [Total Addressable Market] is not thinking big enough."

"We think this TAM could explode with all these new use cases. I've seen it firsthand."

Some stablecoin payment companies act as if they’ve already solved cross-border payments.

“That’s not true yet.”

Sending money across borders is still challenging in 2026:

“I tried doing Wise to one of our teammates in India. It was really painful.”

Cross-border transfers can still cost up to 4% on emerging-market corridors.

So why haven't stablecoins fixed this already?

“The liquidity is not there yet. Many, many of the African markets, many of the Southeast Asian markets.”

The next stage of stablecoin development isn't whether they work or not

It's what happens when the infrastructure around them finally does.

@cyril_mathew, who previously led the USDC program at Coinbase and launched Stripe’s crypto team, is now building stablecoin settlement rails across 50+ countries at Latitude ( @rtp )

"The number one requested feature from Uber partner drivers, is how do I get my money faster?"

Most platforms still pay drivers on a weekly basis, but in emerging markets those drivers fund their own fuel out of pocket every day.

"As a Western person, moving from the US to Amsterdam, I still didn't fully understand that."

"This driver in Ghana or this driver in Argentina, 40% of those wages were put to petrol for their car, so they needed it for working capital. They're relying on that weekly or biweekly wage."

In between, many drivers borrow what they need just to keep driving, because the money they earned yesterday will not arrive until next week.

.@cyril_mathew spent a decade at Uber, Coinbase, and Stripe watching cross-border payments fail at the same point.

People receive stablecoins but have no simple way to convert them into the local currency that they can actually spend.

This led to building Latitude ( @rtp ), a settlement network that connects banks, exchanges, and payment aggregators to convert stablecoin payments into local currency across 50 countries, all in under two minutes.

This week, they announced @oakhcft led a $35 million Series A that closed in three to four weeks, bringing the total raised to $43 million.

Since launching in January 2025, it has secured licenses or approvals in 45 states.

Cyril's conversation with @drewrogers:

2:02 - Latitude closes $35M Series A led by Oak HC/FT

4:51 - Paying Uber drivers across 40 countries from Amsterdam

10:03 - Joining Coinbase and the first crypto Visa card

15:58 - "Without liquidity, these things don't take off"

Latitude announced a $35M Series A today led by @oakhcft, with NEA, Coinbase Ventures, Lightspeed Faction and OpenFX participating. Total raised is now $43M.

Tomorrow, @cyril_mathew, Co-Founder & CEO of Latitude @rtp, tells the behind-the-scenes story on Stableminded Ep. 0060.

In this episode we cover:

> The 20-page memo he wrote when digital assets were banned at Stripe

> The first digital asset card from a major exchange

> The stablecoin payout pilot he ran with Twitter, and why nobody used it

> Why nobody could spend those payouts in Vietnam, Ghana or Colombia

> Why he doesn't think a dollar stablecoin works for everyone

> What it took to get the round done after a stretch of rejections

[Oak HC/FT @oakhcft]

Today, we're proud to announce that Oak HC/FT led a $35 million Series A in Latitude, the global payments infrastructure company connecting stablecoin settlement to local payment rails worldwide.

Stablecoins have solved the middle of cross-border payments. The last mile – turning that settlement into money someone can actually spend – is still slow, expensive, or missing in most of the world. Latitude built that last mile: a single API that moves money into any market and lands it in local currency, in seconds, at transparent rates.

Before building go-to-market, the team spent its first year securing its own money transmitter licenses, reaching licensed or approved status across 45 U.S. markets in about eight months. That's the harder path – and the one that compounds.

We've tracked founders @cyril_mathew, Brian Wrightson, and Vivek Morzaria since before Latitude existed, and now we're proud to back them as they build.

We raised a $35M Series A led by @oakhcft . That brings our total capital raised to $43M.

We spent the last decade watching money get stuck at borders across roles at Uber, Coinbase, Stripe, and Zero Hash. Latitude (@rtp) is what we built with those lessons.
