Was so nice to attend today’s US Navy Association - Fleet Week & Remembrance Ceremony at Police Headquarters.
It was an honor to meet Mr. Roy Richter (ret. US Navy) - World War 2 & Korean War veteran … & Rear Admiral Wesley McCall, U.S. Navy Commander Mid-Atlantic Region. 🇺🇸
Today, we hosted a Fleet Week & Remembrance Ceremony at Police Headquarters to honor @USNavy members past and present, along with awarding Chief Carlos Valdez and retired Police Officer Steven Wallace for their service and dedication to this city and our country.
“War Story” (kind of)
Lunch with Roy Richter recently. Like retired guys do, spoke about “Glory Days.” Summer, ‘01, took a couple of hours one morning before I went to work (Chief of Brooklyn South) to do some snapper fishing with my son, Gerritsen Beach Creek. On my way down to the spot, saw then Capt Roy Richter, XO 63 Pct. My son and I walking down with our fishing poles, a few young guys walked past us, up to the street. Fished for a couple of hours. I told my son, “Throw it in a couple more times, I’m going to bring this stuff up to the car.” I came off the trail, onto the sidewalk, and those same guys were sitting there. I then knew they were up to no good. I walked over to my car, surreptitiously called the 61 Pct, asked them to get plain clothed cops out there to watch them. Turned out Roy Richter saw them right after he saw me, right after they passed me by coming out of the creek. He got the same impression, and he had plain clothed cops from the 63 watching them.
My son and I left the area and shortly after, these guys knocked over some kid and took his bike - robbery. Here’s the best part; when they were interviewed by detectives we learned why they were in the same place for all that time, right near where my son and I were fishing. They said they were planning on robbing the “old guy” fishing with his son, but he looked like he didn’t have any money. (Me! And, I didn’t have any money. 😀)
Everyone loved this story, including my nephew, Michael Roberts (FDNY 9/11/01). We had an ongoing game, scaring each other. After that incident he put a “Scream Mask” in his car, hoping to sneak up on me the next time I was fishing with Joe. However, he would wisely check in on whether I took my gun with me when I fished with my son again, and thought better of it because I started carrying to that place. After the Towers fell, his dad went through his car, and found that mask.
Some good memories - some solemn and bittersweet - but there is one take away that makes me feel particularly good. I was a relatively new Chief of a very high profile and busy Borough, working sometimes 70 hours a week, but even if for only an hour or two, in the morning before work, I made sure to spend time with my son Joe and my daughter Liz.
It is with great sadness we announce the passing of DEA Legislative Director Lou Matarazzo. Lou was a great partner to the DEA, whose lifetime of dedication to members of law enforcement brought tremendous experience to his tireless work. Lou will be sorely missed.
Active Police Officer Francis Gaynor from the @NYPDSpecialops Mounted Unit passed away on 1/18/23 from 9/11 related illness.
Today Police Officer Gaynor was carried to his final resting place at Warwick Cemetery. May he rest in eternal peace. #NeverForget@NYPDnews
I met a great World War II vet named Mr. Roy Richter today. When I told him I have a good friend by that name that served with me in the NYPD, he replied, “That’s my son.”
Great Americans serve our country at home and abroad.
the incredible moment that World War II veterans arrived onto the trading floor of the @NYSE this morning — chills. thank you all for your sacrifice and service to this country as part of the Greatest Generation 🇺🇸
With nearly 25 years of experience in the NYPD, most recently as Deputy Inspector and Commanding Officer of @NYPD70Pct, I know what it takes to take back our streets. We must end the pro-criminal policies, FIRE Hochul & vote for @leemzeldin. @DavidAsmanfox@FoxBusiness.

This is truly an amazing #MyNYPDStory. PO Brian Zeng was working on the beach at 96 Street on the boardwalk when a mother approached him stating her baby was choking on a piece of fruit & was turning blue. PO Zeng performed back blows & removed the fruit from the baby's throat.
Big case for all current restricted carry/premises gun license holders. As former CO of NYPD License Div - still need a license to possess handgun/but no longer need special facts for full carry authority
The Supreme Court STRIKES DOWN a New York gun-control law that required people to show "proper cause" to get a license to carry a concealed handgun outside the home. The vote is 6-3.

Remembering one of NYPD‘s treasures, Chief Chuck Scholl. There are 42 yrs of stories; this is my favorite: CO of the 60 Pct, Coney Island, first day in the command for 15 rookies, just graduated. I came to greet them, saw Chuck in sweatpants pushing a trash pail and broom around
