Disabled since childhood, paralyzed from the age of nine, with a body as small as a child's, weighing only 25 kg (and merely 16 kg before her passing), unable to move on her own, and bearing within herself a whole "litany" of internal ailments—yet, upon the ruins of an abandoned tuberculosis sanatorium in the middle of the forest, she founded a convent, becoming a wise abbess, an organizer, a teacher, and a grace-filled ascetic.
In the spirit of the Gospel, she is a living testament to the Lord’s words: “My strength is made perfect in weakness.” (2 Corinthians 12:9)
In the world, Mother Rafaila bore the name Nina Chernetskaya.
At the age of nine, the little girl contracted measles. Improper medical treatment exacerbated her already fragile health. She became paralyzed and remained an invalid for the rest of her life.
Grieving over this tragedy, her father, Evstafy, passed away. Her mother, Elena, continued to care for her daughter with single-minded love and faith, living in poverty and entrusting everything to the mercy of God.
At the age of 24, Nina was tonsured a Ryassophore nun; at 35, she took the monastic vows, taking the name Seraphima. Following her daughter's example, her mother also entered monastic life, taking the name Magdalina.
After her mother passed away, Seraphima was cared for by the sisters of the community. The women living around her took vows of service and stayed together in her small house. In 1998, Mother Seraphima fell critically ill. With the blessing of Bishop Guri, she was urgently tonsured into the Great Schema, receiving the name Rafaila, and a miracle occurred—she survived.
Shortly thereafter, the Zhytomyr authorities handed over the dilapidated buildings of a sanatorium amidst the pine forest for the construction of a convent.
For 50 years, Mother Rafaila bore the heavy cross of illness and suffering, yet she did not merely survive; she lived a full and grace-filled life. At the end of her earthly journey, she established a beautiful convent full of peace in the Zhytomyr forest, regarded as a spiritual oasis of prayer and service. The pinnacle of her life’s work was the construction of a 49-meter-high cathedral dedicated to Saint Anastasia of Rome, the patroness of Zhytomyr, and Saint Seraphim of Sarov—one of the most significant newly built religious structures in Ukraine at that time.
The doctors at the Shalimov Hospital in Kyiv, where Mother Rafaila spent the final days of her life, were astounded as to how such a tiny body, practically devoid of blood and weighing only 16 kg, could have harbored a soul for so many years. They did not know that before them lay not a helpless dying person, but a warrior of Christ, a person filled with the Holy Spirit, who had bestowed love and spiritual strength upon hundreds and thousands of souls who sought her out.
