I thought I was done when the season ended. I wasn't ready to announce it, and I knew I needed some time to really decide, but I was pretty sure I played my last game. I was honest at that last press conference when I said I needed to look at myself and deicide if I still love
Believing in Destiny Could Be Sabotaging Your Relationship.
If you believe in true love, you're not alone—94% of Americans say they do. I’m one of them. After 33 years of marriage to my true love, I can confidently say that true love is real.
But here’s the catch: true love isn’t destiny. That’s what makes it so sweet.
Many of us grow up believing in love at first sight and soulmates, thanks to the stories we're told. Movies, TV shows, and books paint an idealistic picture of romance, where a cosmic force brings two people together and ensures eternal happiness. Believing in destiny—the idea that two people are cosmically meant to be—can wreak havoc on relationships.
It fosters unrealistic expectations, such as assuming that your partner will intuitively know what you need without communication. It also makes it harder to forgive after conflicts and leads to more distress and escalating tensions. In some cases, it can even result in abrupt breakups, because if a relationship hits a rough patch, it must mean your partner wasn’t *“the one.”
Enduring love isn’t about finding a soulmate or waiting for fate to intervene. It’s about making active choices, embracing commitment, and putting in the effort.
The happiest marriages aren't built on “passionate love.” They’re built on “companionate love.” Passionate love is thrilling—it’s the start of the journey, when you're bonding and everything feels electric. But the strongest relationships evolve into a connection where your partner becomes a lifelong friend.
They've got your back, no matter what. They defend you. They're the person you binge-watch TV with every night, and the one who shares your highs and lows. But this kind of love doesn't happen by chance—it happens by choice.
True love, as Shakespeare wrote, “alters not with his brief hours and weeks, but bears it out even to the edge of doom.”
Challenges and low points aren't evidence that you're not meant to be together. They're opportunities for growth, proof that long-term romance is a sweet adventure, not a cosmic guarantee.
It’s time to let go of the myths about love. Forget soulmates and love at first sight—start turning up the dial on real, enduring love.
