Randomly remembered this, but throwback to when I told everyone from my old TEA group to go on the giant Alex in Hinterlands for a picture and my Warrior who was relatively new to the game got really confused because he hadn't done the Alex raids yet.

On the FFXIV story skip debate:

It feels like people are speaking past each other. I don't think the majority of players are saying that people shouldn't be ALLOWED to skip the story. I think people just want to prevent new players being told that they should just skip the story, because it's "boring."

A Realm Reborn is often touted as this horribly slow story, but I'd say it's actually pretty good. Even Asmongold, a massively endgame focused WoW player, enjoyed A Realm Reborn way more than he thought he would.

If you truly want to just skip all of it, and don't care, that's fine. Nobody is saying you shouldn't be allowed to. But I do think new players should be encouraged to play through the story, and not simply told to skip it.

I know it's a meme nowadays, but the average attention span in 2026 is critically low. Tiktok and video games have let people grow accustomed to getting instant gratification, to the point where many things are designed specifically to capture people as early as humanly possible with shiny numbers and instant rewards.

Encouraging people to enjoy a slower paced work of art with a slow burn story, I would say, is actually very healthy.

Tl;dr
You should be allowed to skip the story if you want, but I don't think you should. And I don't think you should encourage others to.

The second you accept someone's money for a job, you have a duty to them to:

1. Communicate the timeline.
2. Communicate delays.
3. Deliver the agreed upon work to the best of your ability.
4. If unable to fulfil the order according to the initial agreement, offer the option of a refund or compensation.

Unfortunate situations happen. But you must take into account that an emergency may occur on your end and have a system in place in case you are unable to deliver your work. Getting sick, having a family emergency, or having a personal issue happening is a normal part of life, and you need to plan for those inevitable situations. It is not on your clients to have to accept unfinished work with no refund due to your lack of planning. It is on you to ensure that you have a way to recompense them in those unfortunate cases. Whether that be a refund or the option of future work to compensate the client (if they accept it).
