Tipping in America feels like a broken system.
I don't get why taxes aren't included in the prices, and then you're expected to add an extra 18-20% on top?
Also, tips for basic service like a coffee order seems EXTREMELY excessive to me.
Introverts love doing nothing. Sitting alone in their house. Eating snacks, watching movies, staring at walls, random dance moves, pausing at the window, rooftop sunsets. This is what calms their mind & nourishes their soul. The ordinary. The little things. But you won't get it.
We have a depressed collective because we’re not told how important it is to paint, write, and make things. Without creativity humans go into survival mode.
If you don’t voluntarily tell me your business, I won’t ask.
It doesn’t mean I don’t care about you, I avoid nosiness in case you aren’t comfortable talking about it.
Japa loneliness is a real thing & it's not funny - and it is mostly not sexual.
We underestimate the impact of social interactions
Those mama selling provisions, your bike guy gisting you, your guy living two streets away.
Let me take it apart with context and other instances.
Whenever they hit me with a "Your English is very good. Do you guys speak a lot of English in Zimbabwe?"
I always retort "Oh thank you. It's probably because you guys colonized us for 90 years"
Some redden in the face....
In selecting a kind partner, remember not to date people who esteem money and things money can buy above human relationship. You mistakenly stain their cloth for an event and they want to rip your head off. Their phone slipped from your hand and they curse you with everything above and beneath heaven or even tear you a slap. Something happened to their laptop while you were using it and you never hear the last of it about how much it cost and how clumsy you are. Run oooo. Date people who are empathetic and genuinely kind. People who understand mistakes and not kill you for it.
Years ago in 300 level, I saw a lady crying outside my hostel in company of her friends who were consoling her. She was shaking and crying that her boyfriend will kill her. Why? His iPad fell from her hands. My friend I was walking with said "Ahhhh, you know how much be iPad? Omo." I told him that iPad might be costly but it is just an iPad and the iPad is not the problem here, it is the relationship. Nobody should be this terrified of their partner. If she is cryng that he will kill her, there is a much deeper underlying problem. He probably beats her on a norm. It couldn't have been deliberate. It could have slipped from anybody.
I often say that if your partner drives your car out and they bashed it, your first reaction should be whether they are okay and take them to the hospital for a test. It is just a car. You cannot esteem a car over your partner's life. You can always fix it or buy a new one - no matter how long it takes. In a manner of speaking, you need to focus on people who are genuinely kind as a personality. Those are the ones who can be actually kind in relationship because you can't give what you don't have. Factor that in when choosing a partner.
In 400l a hostel mate borrowed my phone to receive some files and it slipped from his hand and cracked. He came to me and told me about it and the repairer billed him 14k. I split the bill with him. I knew it was a mistake and how do I expect him to survive if he paid for it alone? I wasnt even sure he had the money. In Law School, I was sleeping but woke up for a moment when I saw my roommate hit my laptop and it fell to the floor. It was a mistake. He thought I was sleeping. He picked it up and he never mentioned it. I didn't either because I saw it was a mistake and I didn't see the point of making a fuss. First time my partner cooked for me, she wanted to cook the stew the way I cooked mine to make me happy but she wasn't sure it came out the way it was supposed to. I just laughed and told her that it was okay and next time she should cook anything her own way. I want to eat her food. It is her home so she should be free to do things to her taste. I appreciated the meal and kissed her because it was made with love. That is more important than the taste and the cost. She is a very good cook by the way. What is the worse that would have happened? We would have cooked another one or laughed over it.
I gave all these examples because I need you to know it is about personality. Everyone that knows me in person knows I do not have attachment to money or anything money can buy. My belief is that if it costs money, it can be replaced. I have my personal values and humanity is at the very top of it.
I have seen people receive beating or slaps or curses for the most flimsy reason. Many are afraid of their partners. Many people have even told me they are afraid to send a message to their own partner because they fear their reaction. That is not a home of love. The world is cold, home should bring you peace. Your partner is home.

A core parenting belief of mine:
One of the most important things we can do for our kids is help them learn the power of their imaginations
But you have to contend with the constant onslaught of overstimulating screens
Here's 2 ways we beat screens:
First: reading, every day, no exceptions
In addition to the obvious benefits of being a strong reader, stories in books help open up the imagination and broaden our kids' worlds.
They expand their ideas of what's possible. My advice is start the reading habit as early as possible, and let your kids see you reading as often as you can
Second: audio stories
As an alternative to screens, we listen to audio stories (I even create one for 3-8 year olds that I'll link in a follow-up post). We listen to them together with our oldest son. You can SEE him engaging with the audio in a way he never does with screens. You can see his brain working. You can see him filling in the blanks in his mind.
Whereas if he was just watching a screen, there are no blanks to fill in. No imagining, no envisioning. Just consuming.
"Imagination rules the world"
- Napoleon Bonaparte
This quote is more powerful than people realize
It's impossible to build anything if you can't first imagine it
Everything ever created by man first existed in someone's imagination
Imagination is a muscle. And too much screen time just atrophies it.
I have the deepest affection for intellectual conversations. No ulterior motives just being able talk about love, life, just about anything and everything. Speaking without fear or regret of consequence. Just communicating for hours trying to understand someone else’s thought process.
