Great Zimbabwe University is evicting residents of Mashava who live in Chemberi, where the university's campus hostels are also located. The university plans to expand its hostels, which is why it is evicting the residents. However, these residents are owed money by their former employer, Shabanie-Mashava Mines (SMM) Holdings, which has ceased operations. SMM had allowed the residents to stay in the houses as compensation for their unpaid salaries, with a promise to pay them in the future.
