@CathyYoung63 I got an English degree from an Ivy League college in the mid 2000s. It was a great and mind expanding time that prepared me well for my current career. But the typical load was each class assigning one novel per week. Lot of reading. I didn’t always do all of it tho I tried
For 30 years I've tried to correct this nonsense. The vast majority will not listen. There has to be a villain - some evil politicians who stole all their money. Some easy solution (raise the cap!) they aren't telling us. Its conspiracy theories all the way down because "were getting screwed" political victimology is easier than accepting that we've promised ourselves more benefits than the economy can deliver at the tax rates we expect.
Oh I hear it a lot. (I’m a 40 something with two kids in dc). It’s not really a rational point of view - I expect there to be more human suffering from the fertility crisis than warming at this point - but I definitely hear it. In some cases though I think it’s a justification for not wanting to have kids in the first place… in others, it’s a genuine belief. But either way if you think the value of a single new life is outweighed by a very marginal amount of warming to the planet then parenthood probably isn’t for you.
@robbysoave I have heard it a lot, including from people to whom I am close. It is not super rational, really, but it is a common sentiment. At this point, I think the fertility crisis is going to cause more suffering than the climate crisis.
@CathyYoung63 I’m just gutted by this. Persepolis is such a perfect memoir. I think it should be required middle school reading in the USA because it shows us just how lucky we are (pt 1) and how we should have empathy (pt2)
@katrosenfield Come live in DC and then this can be every Senate race for you!
(It’s sort of amazing how few people actually are going to vote in this election versus how much were all gonna talk about it).
@CathyYoung63@SarahLongwell25 I'm a resist lib and I am glad I don't live in Maine (or any state) to have to make this choice. But I sure as heck would not vote for the Nazi tattoo guy. Democrats can and should ask for much better.
Let's give our resources to our many other fine candidates across the USA
