A down-and-out drunkard had spent half his life in the company of wine. One day, he lay insensible beneath an old pagoda tree by the street, and in his stupor, slipped into a dream. In the vision, he transformed into a great general of the ant kingdom. By virtue of his valiant wits for survival, he led the ant soldiers and generals to fend off towering fallen logs and do battle with a vicious dragon. For a time, he became a hero revered by all in the ant kingdom, basking in glory and honor, and soon forgot he was but a wretched wanderer in the mortal world.
Just after he triumphed over the dragon in the fierce fight, he leaned against the tree to rest for a while—and fell into another dream.
The ant nest beside him loomed tiny as dust in the setting sun. The throngs of soldiers, the glory of being a general, all had been nothing but an illusion dreamed beneath the pagoda tree. For a moment, he could not tell if he was now the sobered drunkard in the mortal world, or still the ant general in the dream. He only felt that all the rise and fall, glory and decay in the world were as fleeting and insubstantial as mist and smoke around an ant nest.
