Rory Linkletterโs 21 mile run (14mi easy + 5mi surge at 5:17 avg, 2 mi cooldown) is a masterclass in long-run execution.
3 takeaways for your training:
- Save your fuel: Keep the first 60% truly easy so you have energy left to finish strong.
- Fast legs on tired feet: Toss some miles at goal race pace near the end of a long run to prep for late-race fatigue.
- Control the effort: Keep your heart rate lowโlong runs build engine size, not redline stress.
Do you add surges to your long runs?
CJ Albertson just logged 22 miles at a 5:01 avg pace in Fresnoโwhich is already terrifyingโbut he also said he
โsaw Magy Marcelo and dropped a 4:33.โ ๐คฏ
Most runners see someone they know on a run and do a little head nod or maybe a little ๐๐ฝ . CJ sees a fellow runner and decides to do a 4:33 last mile after running 21 miles. ๐
Me in normal everyday life:
Hates using a public restroom because I donโt want to share a bathroom with strangers. ๐ โโ๏ธ
Also me at races:
Hitting a porta potty thatโs already been used by half the field

Sydney marathon was absolutely wild.
On the menโs side, Addisu Gobena dropped a 2:04:42 to break the course record, pulling away from Chimdessa Debele (2:04:46) in the last 800m. Tebello Ramakongoana snatched 3rd in 2:04:57 on a photo finish. Five guys went sub-2:05.
For the women, Peres Jepchirchir finished in 2:18:31. Irine Cheptai took 2nd (2:22:11) and Shure Demise Ware got 3rd (2:22:33).
Me setting an alarm for work:
Only 7 hours of sleep? My body is completely shut down.
Also me setting an alarm for a Saturday morning long run:
- 4:15 AM alarm goes off โฐ
- Slept 4 hours because I was overthinking my pre run bagel ๐ฅฏ
- Dressed, hydrated, and in the dark at 5:00 AM

Rory Linkletterโs upcoming schedule:

2x1 mile @ 4:31, 4:30
Joe Kleckerโs week is a masterclass for all of us:
Hard effort: 4x5K at altitude
Next 48 hours: 32 miles of easy recovery.
The takeaway for your own training? Stop trying to race your easy runs.
BUT, more importantly, don't attempt to run 32 miles in 48 hours ๐
Me stepping outside for a 10 min errand:
50ยฐF? Absolutely not. Winter has arrived, cancelling all plans. ๐ฅถ
Me dressing for a Sunday long run:
38ยฐF in shorts and a singlet? Perfect. Might actually overheat. ๐ฅ

Reed Fischerโs definition of "fatigued legs": 13 miles in Colorado, 5x2K intervals, and dropping a 5:01 split ๐๐ฝ
My definition of fatigued legs: standing up off the couch after an easy run and hearing three distinct popping sounds. ๐
Me at the local coffee shop:
$7.50 for a latte? No thanks, I will be making coffee at home.
Also me...
$285 super shoes that disintegrate after 200 miles ๐
$50 box of gels ๐ฌ

Massive news for Berlin marathon: Defending champion Sabastian Sawe has officially withdrawn due to injury.
Hoping he gets healthy ASAP so he can line up in Valencia and battle it out with Yomif Kejelcha again. The world needs that rematch on Spanish asphalt. ๐ฟ
CJ Albertson keeping the engine humming for his Chicago Marathon build ๐
Week of Aug 17 โ Aug 23:

Australian ex-WorldTour cyclist turned pro runner Jimmy Whelan just clocked a massive 1:01:19 PB (61:19) for 8th place at the Antrim Coast Half Marathon ๐ฆ๐บ๐ฅ
To put the depth of this race into perspective:
โข Isaia Lasoi & Daniel Mateiko both broke the course record (58:26 & 58:30)
โข Jimmy averaged 2:54/km pace to cross in 61:19
โข Beat NCAA legend Edward Cheserek (61:27) and Galen Rupp (61:30)
Joe Klecker just dropped 4x5k off 3 mins recovery in Boulder, casually sandwiching marathon-pace blocks (15:25, 15:28) between half-marathon speed (14:28, 14:27).
Conner Mantz's latest 13-mile workout in Provo featured 8 miles at 5:06 pace, immediately followed by 3x1600m in 4:17, 4:17, and 4:11 ๐ณ
He closed the last 800m in 2:01.
"Surprised how relaxed the fatigue and 1600s felt" is the kind of quote that strikes fear into the competition ๐โโ๏ธ๐ฅ
