On August 12, 1948, the rain couldn’t wash away history.

At London’s Wembley Stadium, a newly independent India faced the nation that had ruled it for nearly 200 years.

The stage was more than just an Olympic final in men’s hockey,it was a statement.
Partition had left the team depleted. The Indian Hockey Federation was broke. Many players had lost family and homes.

Yet, wearing the tricolour for the first time at the Olympics, they fought with skill, grit, and pride.

Led by Kishan Lal, India dominated Great Britain 4-0, with Balbir Singh Dosanjh scoring twice and Trilochan Singh Bawa and Pat Jansen adding one each.

As the Indian flag was hoisted and the national anthem played in front of thousands of Britons, a year-old free nation celebrated its first Olympic gold.

“That day when our flag was hoisted in front of thousands of Britons at the Wembley Stadium, I realised what independence means. When the national anthem was played and the flag was going up, I felt that I was flying.” said Balbir Singh Dosanjh, as reported by HT.
