Former first lady Jackie Kennedy, who lost her husband in 1963, offers her condolences to Coretta Scott King at Martin Luther King Jr.’s funeral. April 9, 1968.... Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated on April 4, 1968, in Memphis, Tennessee, at age 39. His funeral in Atlanta drew tens of thousands of attendees and was broadcast nationwide, marking one of the most significant public mourning events in U.S. history. Coretta Scott King played a central role in organizing the proceedings and continuing her husband’s civil rights work. Jacqueline Kennedy’s presence carried added weight given her own experience with national tragedy following President John F. Kennedy’s assassination in 1963. Both events reshaped the political and social climate of the United States during the 1960s. The funeral included a procession through Atlanta and a service at Ebenezer Baptist Church, where King had served as co-pastor.
