The main thing that's annoying me about this Ummah vs. Left discourse re: the West is that much of the Palestine solidarity (as is/was the case with Sudan, Syria, Chechnya, Bosnia etc.) is really being driven by Muslim communities in the face of surveillance & persecution.

Last thing I’ll say on this topic, because it’s time to move on:

A number of Muslim scholars were rounded up and imprisoned over the last decade, especially in the Gulf, precisely because they were major advocates of global Muslim unity.

That matters because if the idea of the Ummah were as fake, sterile, or politically meaningless as some of you claim, these regimes would not spend so much energy crushing the people who call Muslims back to it.

One example is Salman al-Ouda in Saudi Arabia, who was arrested in 2017, placed in solitary confinement, and had travel bans imposed on members of his family after he refused to obey an order from Saudi authorities to tweet a statement supporting the Saudi-led blockade of Qatar. He is still imprisoned to this day.

But that barely registered outside Muslim circles, because at the time Western secularists were too busy praising MbS for his supposed “liberal reform” of Saudi Arabia.

So you’ll excuse me if I don’t take seriously critiques of Muslim political imagination from people whose geopolitical worldview seemed to revolve around judging states by how lax they were on alcohol, nightclubs, and Western-style entertainment.

You can tell how serious these people are because their fallback argument is to take the behavior of US-client Gulf states and treat it as representative of the global Muslim world, which is basically the same intellectual move the Fox News crowd was making after 9/11.

And the irony is that a lot of these people love pretending they’re unusually well-read, but their entire lens on Muslim political life is still shaped by the post-9/11 world they claim to oppose. They’re borrowing the same GWOT framework that treated any international form of Muslim solidarity as inherently suspicious, dangerous, or extremist, and then acting like they’ve arrived at some brave materialist critique.

Like, yeah, of course Gulf regimes failed Syrians, of course kafala is a disgrace, of course Muslim rulers have betrayed the Ummah repeatedly (nobody serious is denying that). But those states aren’t neutral examples of “Islamic solidarity”; they’re modern nation-states deeply embedded in American security arrangements, global capital, regime preservation, and the post-9/11 counterterror order.

After 9/11, and especially through the GWOT, many of these governments became even more aggressive in policing transnational Muslim solidarity through surveillance, restrictions on charities, crackdowns on Islamic political movements, and treating any independent mobilization outside state control as a threat.

Pretending that the behavior of US-aligned regimes operating under the GWOT framework (initiated by the very governments these Western leftists are latched onto the teat of) somehow disproves the existence of Muslim solidarity is lazy. It doesn’t “expose Islam” like y’all are pretending it does; it exposes how much of your own analysis is still downstream of the very imperial framework you claim to reject.
