Although Wintersweet was introduced from China so long ago as 1766, it is not often seen now except in the older #gardens; and in honesty I should warn purchasers of young plants that it will not begin to flower until it is five or six years old. But it is worth waiting for.
What IS this @BBCOne. In my line of work I teach/perform recorder to literally thousands of people, who react positively and with enthusiasm. It occurs to me that the ONLY time I see the recorder being disparaged like this is by journalists who don't know what else to say 🙃
The trees are getting ready to perform one of nature’s greatest magic tricks 🪄🤹🏼 Their leaf buds are tiny bundles of colour, all packed full of the promise of spring, and a wonderful source of winter joy 🙏

It's #NationalHedgehogDay!
The name hedgehog comes from the Middle English 'heyghoge', for their love of hedgerows. Another early name was 'furzepig', from the Old English for gorse, because of all those prickles.

Today is #Candlemas, halfway between winter solstice & spring equinox. Medieval #folklore says today’s weather predicts when winter will end:
‘If #CandlemasDay be fair & bright, winter will have another fight. If Candlemas Day brings cloud & rain, winter won't come again’.
Wonderful recorder playing last night on @BBCInTune from @luciehorsch and Thomas Dunford. What a fantastic ambassador she is for our instrument. https://t.co/iiaT1T4agv

Today is Childermas Day, the feast of the Holy Innocents, on the fourth day of Christmas. It's an appropriate day for the Coventry Carol and other medieval lullaby-laments, which give voice to the grief that lies near the heart of the Christmas season: https://t.co/KYr5ltY2ou
