How Much Will it Cost the Congress to Win 2029?

At least ₹50,000 crore. And that is why Rahul Gandhi needs India Inc.

Here's the math:

The 2024 elections cost ₹1.35 lakh crore. Political parties would have spent at least ~₹1 lakh crore out of that — only a tiny fraction of which was offical.

Out of the official, audited expenditure, the BJP accounted for 45%, the Congress 19%.

If we assume the same break-up for the unofficial spending figure, the BJP spent ~ ₹45,000 crore to get 23.6 crore votes. That's an average of ₹1,900 per vote won. This is a conservative estimate, since the BJP's actual share of unofficial spends is likely to be higher.

The Congress will need at least 30% of votes polled to be in the running to lead a coalition government. Projecting the electorate for 2029, and using the same turnout number as 2024, it works out to ~21 crore votes.

Now, adjust for inflation over 5 years — ₹1,900 will be the same as ₹2,400 in 2029.

So at ₹2,400 per voter the Congress will need more than ₹50,000 crore in 2029.

There's no way to get it without the active backing of some sections of India Inc. Those business houses will have to be able to face the brunt of the state's action against them, while they give money to the Congress.

This is a structural reality of Indian politics. No one can escape it.
