Spoiler: “I didn’t go to business school or start with a trust fund; one morning I just woke up, said “frick it, I’m gonna do this”, and filed an LLC.”
A bunch of people asked me how I got my first client at my small business, and what that felt like, so I’m going to talk about that today.
Read on if you are apprehensive about starting that business or reaching out to your first client!
In April 2022 I launched my LLC, ordered some business cards, and made some social media pages.
I had super low confidence, didn’t really believe in my abilities, and was nervous about reaching out to potential clients.
As a digital media company, it’s important to have a good portfolio, and I had nothing to show for mine.
🆓 Sometime around November 2022 I got my first client, although I did not get paid for the job. I was not confident and I didn’t think I could make money on it, so I told him I would do it for free.
💸 This is totally OK, but knowing your worth is also equally as important!!
🏡 Fast-forward to July 2023 at an estate sale. As they were wrapping up the auction, I walked up to the owner of the auction company and gave him my business card, explained what I could do for his company, and went on my way.
🙏🏻🥳 To my surprise, about a week or two later, I got a phone call from their company saying they had 2 jobs for me and they asked for quotes!!!
The first part, networking, was easy compared to coming up with a quote!!
My line of work is very subjective and each job varies in complexity and requirements, so pricing is not easy for anyone in the industry.
I found an amazing software, called HoneyBook, that allowed me to make an invoice with an attached service contract and a payment all in one link.
🕕 After about six hours of sitting at my computer and typing in numbers, figuring out how much I wanted to get paid, changing the numbers, changing them back, I finally came to some figures I thought would work and I sent over my first ever client quotes for approval.
🤐📵🔇 Radio silence.
My mind was racing with thoughts like:
‼️“Now you’ve done it.”
‼️“They’re going to say ‘take a hike kid’.”
‼️“That’s way too expensive for what they asked for.”
‼️“You’ll never make it.”
‼️“Why didn’t you just offer to do it for free.”
Three days later after waves of anxiety and stress and second guessing myself, I get a text:
“your quotes are approved”
What I had spent literal hours and days of my life pining over, they resolved with four words.
I showed up to the first job and met a gentleman from the company there, we hit it off, he was impressed with my work, I got the footage and content required, edited everything as quickly as possible, and sent it over to them, and they loved it.
The same thing happened with the second one, and I have more jobs with them lined up already.
For the numbers people, I ended up making:
‼️Job 1) 3x my hourly 9-5 pay (8.33hrs)
‼️Job 2) 6x my hourly pay (6.5hrs)
The second one went much faster as i had already honed my skills a bit, so I earned more per hr than on the first even though they were priced similarly.
I’m still trying to learn how to make it my full time job and swap my 9-5 to part time, as there’s additional complexities to that that I’ll discuss later, but I’m hopeful for a future where I can be a creative business owner full time 🩵❤️
If you’re reading this, and you’re wanting to start a small business, but don’t know where to start, follow me for future tips as I’ll be discussing this in length.

Get out there & chase your dreams! You can do anything if you put your mind to it. 🚀🌌
