The Widening Gulf Between China and the Chinese

The more closely I watch China, the more I see a widening gulf between the country portrayed by the state and the country experienced by ordinary people.

Chinese EVs are conquering global markets.

But workers tightening screws on assembly lines are asking:

Why are my working hours getting longer while my wages have barely increased?

China is building world-class AI capabilities.

But young graduates struggling to find jobs are saying:

AI is making my job prospects worse and worse.

Luxury apartments costing tens of millions of RMB in Shanghai can still sell out at launch.

But ordinary homeowners watching the value of their own apartments fall are asking:

What does that have to do with us chives?

I am hearing this clamour more and more:

China is getting stronger. What does that have to do with me?

This goes to the heart of how China is governed.

The CCP gets to define both what constitutes national power and what is in China’s national interest. Under Xi Jinping, that authority has become concentrated to an extraordinary degree in one man.

Yet the interests of the CCP—and of its leader—are not, and have never been, the same as the interests of ordinary Chinese.

For much of the reform era, rapid economic growth obscured that contradiction.

The Party wanted growth because growth strengthened the CCP, strengthened China and improved the lives of hundreds of millions of people. Their interests were never identical, but for decades they largely travelled in the same direction.

A rising tide lifted almost all boats.

Since Covid, that alignment has increasingly broken down.

Xi’s conception of national strength places far greater weight on technological self-sufficiency, manufacturing dominance, military power, supply-chain security, state control and the ability to withstand confrontation with the West.

By those measures, China may indeed be getting stronger.

But for many Chinese, their own economic security, confidence and expectations are moving in the opposite direction, evidenced by that 300 million plus giga workers without stable pay and benefits.

That divergence is becoming harder and harder to ignore.

And I keep hearing the same question:

China may be getting stronger. What does that have to do with me?

This feels qualitatively different from the reform era.

For decades, making China stronger and making Chinese people better off largely travelled together. Increasingly, they do not.

Which leads to the question I keep coming back to:

Where is the breaking point?

It maybe far off, but this is evidently on the horizon.

- The woman entered our country on May 14, 2024
- The visa was set to expire on November 13, 2024
- She failed to deport before this date, now in violation of our immigration laws

The controversy here is even if she had legal authorization to work pending an asylum case, how did she have a nursing license as a noncitizen with an expired visa

This is going to sound insane...but its already been said more than once.

Maybe the reason so many illegals never apply for citizenship after years of living here is simple.

Their situation works better while they remain illegal.

They get work opportunities that Americans are locked out of. They receive benefits paid for by sanctuary states. They take cash for the jobs they do. And they can return home whenever it suits them.

Citizenship would bring taxes, rules, and permanent commitment. Illegal status keeps the door open both ways. They know they have jobs because they are not citizens and so do the folks that employ them.

High-trust countries assume people want to join the system. Low-trust operators treat the system as a temporary resource to extract from.

That incentive structure explains a lot more than we are usually allowed to say.

They’re arranging 𝗯𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗹𝗼𝗮𝗻𝘀 𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘂𝗽𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝘁𝗼 $𝟮𝟱𝟬,𝟬𝟬𝟬, taking a cut of the money, and then helping those same people leave Canada.

When they say “whether you choose to leave or stay,” they’re talking about leaving Canada and 𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗮𝗺𝗲 𝘀𝗺𝘂𝗴𝗴𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗻𝗲𝘁𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸 𝘁𝗼 𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗴𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗨𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀.

🚨 JUST IN: Indian national Varun Batchigari, 20, accused of strangling his 19-year-old girlfriend Julissa Salazar near the University of Arizona, entered the U.S. on an F-1 student visa in 2024.

Police say Batchigari killed Salazar after she planned to break up with him, then allegedly stole her phone and posed as her in texts to her mother.

Batchigari allegedly attempted to flee to India but was arrested in Germany. The FBI is now working to extradite him to Arizona to face a first-degree murder charge.

She declined MAiD, citing her Christian faith and her preference for a natural death.
