Canada: Crying Over Spilt Milk in a Self‑Inflicted Stagnation

Canada’s elite have spent a quarter‑century turning a rich, opportunity‑dense economy into a slow‑growth, over‑levered cul‑de‑sac, and they still insist nothing is structurally wrong. There is no sense crying over spilt milk about past mistakes when the architects of this stagnation are still in charge and still in denial.

Canada did not just drift into secular stagnation; it embraced a kind of virtue socialism and an industrial policy anchored on climate change targets rather than productive capacity, competitiveness, or growth. An economy built on world‑class natural resources, strategic geography, and human capital has been deliberately downgraded into a housing‑addicted, low‑productivity balance sheet recession risk, and the people who did it still show up on panels calling this “resilience.”

For years, Canada’s comparative advantages in energy, resources, and industrial capacity were something to apologize for, regulate to death, or tax into oblivion, while policy and capital chased the illusion that you could mortgage and virtue‑signal your way to prosperity. The result is a country flirting with a liquidity trap, where even lower rates may barely move a real economy suffocated by over‑priced assets, under‑built productive capital, and households too damaged to borrow again.

The real scandal is not that Canada faces secular stagnation; it is that the elite engineered it, denied it, wrapped it in climate rhetoric, and now blame external shocks while the data scream that this is a made‑in‑Canada crisis.

To be clear, Canada’s problems are not the result of President Trump!

If Canada’s elite will not finally admit that decades of attacking its own strengths, worshipping its own bubbles, and treating industrial policy as a morality play have left the country one downturn away from a full balance sheet recession, then they are not guardians of the national interest, they are custodians of decline, and at this point, there really is no sense crying over spilt milk, only over the refusal to fix the mess they made.

Let me tell you what just happened in Canada because nobody else is going to frame this for you properly.

A man named Patrick Pichette, former Senior VP of Google, sat on a stage at the Canadian Liberal convention this week and suggested that young Canadians who want to leave the country to work in America should pay an exit tax of $500K to leave. And the room applauded. Thunderous applause, actually.

Now, let me tell you about Patrick Pichette.

Patrick Pichette left Canada decades ago to take a job at Microsoft. You know what he paid to leave? Thirty dollars. He climbed the ladder. Made his fortune. Moved to Europe, where he lives now, comfortably, far away from the country he's trying to lock other people inside of. Pretty sweet.

This man paid thirty dollars for the same door he now wants to charge your kids $500,000 to walk through.

That's not a policy. That's pulling the ladder up behind you and setting it on fire. What a nice guy! Just another "compassionate" and "empathetic" progressive to add to my list.

But here's where it gets really fun. Let's zoom out.

The Canadian boomers have built themselves quite a paradise up there in Snow Mexico. They inflated a real estate bubble so extreme that a starter home costs nearly a million dollars. Their children can't afford groceries. Their grandchildren will never own property. The entire middle class ladder has been sawed off at the third rung.

They opened the borders and brought in so many people so fast that the cities don't resemble what they looked like ten years ago. The character of entire neighborhoods changed in a single generation. And if you say anything about it, if you even notice it out loud, you're a racist. You smile and clap and pretend you don't see your own country disappearing in front of you.

The boomers don't live in those neighborhoods, of course. They live in the suburbs they bought for $200,000 in 1995 that are now worth $2.5 million. They don't see it. They don't have to. They only see the TV. The state broadcaster. That's how their reality is defined for them.

And what are they worried about? A recent poll showed that the number one priority for older Canadian voters was signaling against Donald Trump. Not housing. Not immigration. Not the cost of living. Trump. Orange man bad. That's what keeps them up at night while their kids can't afford milk. And they don't feel any embarrassment over it. In fact, they're PROUD of it.

These are the people who just handed Mark Carney a majority government. Serious people. Serious decisions. Obviously.

So the young Canadians, the ones who can still do math and still want a future to look forward to, start looking south. America has jobs. Affordable housing. A culture that still rewards ambition instead of punishing it. Not to mention the beauty of the First and Second Amendments. Can you blame them?

And what is Canada's response? Not "let's fix the economy." Not "let's make it possible to build a life here."

Lock the door. Charge them half a million for the key.

Thomas Sowell predicted this pattern. When you raise the cost of leaving, you don't keep your best people. You keep the ones who can't afford to escape. The ambitious ones leave earlier, before the cage door closes. The ones left behind are the ones the government deserves: obedient, dependent, and too broke to fight back.

Free countries don't need exit taxes. Prisons do.

You know what? Maybe it's time for America to just put Canada under a conservatorship. Like Britney Spears. Somebody needs to step in and manage their affairs because they are clearly not capable of governing themselves. Their government is spending their money, controlling their movements, trapping them inside their own borders, freezing bank accounts, and making decisions that no sane person would agree to.

Sound extreme? Tell me how it's different from what Canada is already doing to its own citizens.

Canada, its been 120 years... It was a good run.

You did some things, we did some things... And at the end of the day, it's not us... It's you.

I just watched @Martyupnorth & @TroyWestwood debating Alberta separation.

With all due respect to Troy, he displays a surface-level knowledge of what it is that actually irks Albertans to the point that they would want to leave the nation.

His point of view seems to be, no, you can't separate because this is a country, and if you don't like it you can just leave.

He seems to interject arguments with names like Theo Fleury, David Parker and Jeff Raff as somehow being the movers and shakers, none of whom will have any political power should this come about.

He also referred to it as Maga (naturally) and then went on to say how it's a white Christian nationalist movement, falling just short of telling Marty that him and his friends are a bunch of racists. He also claims that he cares a lot about Canadian sovereignty.

Let me help you out a little bit Troy...

If you think this is about a pipeline or some transfer payments, you're wrong.

This is about both historical, and present grievances. We don't have fair representation in elections, the senate, or the Supreme Court.

We pay more than our fair share into the system but get little back ever, all while having our potential economic success blocked by those who are on the take, in a nation so dysfunctional that it can't even trade amongst itself.

If Canada owns Alberta, then likewise Alberta owns Canada, therefore the ports on the British Columbia coast also belong to Alberta.
Where are you on that issue?

And now the rest of the story...
I ask you: What is Canada?
Is it the post national state with no core identity that Trudeau spoke of? If so then what exactly is it that Alberta should be holding on to?

Canada is now largely controlled by foreign ngos that nobody voted for, which is the exact opposite of democracy and sovereignty, yet Albertans get preached to by "patriotic" Canadians every day about those very things.

Our federal government has enacted bills that have killed the energy sector which stifled the economy and our doubled debt now jeopardizes the future of our youth...That matters.

They are now working on bills to stifle Free Speech, plus they want to take our guns and what do they say about governments that want to censor you and take your guns?
They are never the good guys.

Canada shows every sign of creeping communism, and I'm not talking about the Chinese "communism by osmosis" that you mockingly referred to.

Alberta and the West see what's coming and want to save ourselves, and pass on a better world to the next generation before it's too late, because we care about stuff like that.

Just remember that we voted for exactly none of this, because we were never afforded the luxury of having votes that matter...

Ministers would be able to temporarily exempt any individual, company, organization, or entity from the application of almost any provision of any federal law (or regulations made under those laws) that the minister is responsible for administering or enforcing, with the sole exception of the Criminal Code

They can themselves, and deem anyone they choose exempt from ALL laws. The only exception is the criminal code
