Saya baru menerima berita yang amat menyentak jiwa iaitu sahabat saya yang juga mantan Perdana Menteri Malaysia yang kelima Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi telah kembali menemui ilahi.

Masih segar di ingatan tatkala kali terakhir menziarahi beliau yang berada dalam keadaan yang sangat uzur lantas meruntun jiwa yang hiba.

Namun saat tangan kami bersentuhan, matanya yang kabur masih memancarkan sinar kasih dan sikap damai yang tidak pernah padam.

Dalam derapan langkah politik yang sering gawat dan menyesakkan, Pak Lah sentiasa menjadi pihak yang menenangkan. Beliau menerima saya dengan penuh adab dan ihsan, meski kami pernah berada di medan politik yang bertentangan. Itulah betapa besarnya jiwa seorang negarawan ulung.

Pak Lah tidak sekadar pemimpin, malah merupakan seorang insan berjiwa besar yang menerapkan naratif baru dalam politik kekuasaan di Malaysia.

Dengan pendekatan Islam Hadhari, beliau menjambatani antara aspek kemajuan dan pembangunan dengan nilai.

Di bawah kepemimpinannya, kita telah menyaksikan reformasi di bidang kehakiman, ketelusan dalam pentadbiran, dan pemerkasaan institusi.

Beliau adalah sosok yang memerdekakan suara rakyat melalui pembukaan ruang media dan penyertaan awam. Pentadbiran beliau berpaksi pada Rancangan Malaysia Kesembilan yang memacu pertumbuhan ekonomi serta memfokuskan pembangunan insan dan di pedesaan.

Namun lebih dari segala pencapaian itu, Pak Lah mengajarkan kita erti kemanusiaan dalam kepemimpinan.

Beliau memimpin dengan wajah yang tidak marah, tangan yang tidak menggenggam kuasa, dan suara yang tidak meninggi meski diasak bertubi-tubi.

Saya masih ingat sewaktu saya sendiri bergelut dalam episod hidup yang gelap dan derita, beliau tidak pernah menambah luka dengan kata-kata nista. Itulah peribadi Pak Lah yang sentiasa memilih damai meski mudah untuk membalas.

Kepada keluarga Tun Jeanne, anakanda Khairy Jamaluddin dan keluarga besar beliau, saya ucapkan takziah setulusnya dari lubuk hati. Seluruh negara turut bersedih atas kehilangan seorang negarawan yang membumi.

Selamat jalan, Pak Lah.

Similarly, in football officiating, a rigid hierarchy creates two key problems:

Senior referee on the pitch: VAR officials often hesitate to challenge the authority of a senior referee, fearing their input will be dismissed or lead to conflict.

Senior referee in VAR: A senior official in the VAR room can dominate the decision-making process, overruling the less experienced head referee without meaningful collaboration.

Both scenarios lead to poor decisions because hierarchy, rather than teamwork, drives the process. PGMOL’s habit of publicly defending referees, even in cases of clear mistakes, reinforces this culture and erodes trust in the officiating system.

How PGMOL’s Actions Worsen the Problem:

Defensiveness Over Mistakes: By rarely admitting errors, PGMOL discourages referees and VAR officials from owning mistakes and learning from them.

Reinforcing Hierarchy: PGMOL’s frequent defense of senior referees reinforces power imbalances.

Lack of Accountability: Without visible consequences for repeated mistakes, trust in officiating erodes, and the system appears more concerned with protecting reputations than ensuring fairness.

Lessons from CRM for PGMOL:
Flatten the Hierarchy: Treat all officials—whether on the pitch or in VAR—as equal contributors to decisions.

Acknowledge Mistakes: Publicly admitting errors builds trust, encourages learning, and prioritizes improvement over defensiveness.

Train for Psychological Safety: Provide training to help referees communicate openly, recognize unconscious biases, and collaborate effectively across roles.

Ensure Accountability: Implement clear and visible consequences for repeated errors to rebuild public confidence in officiating.

Just as CRM transformed aviation safety by addressing rigid hierarchies and poor communication, PGMOL must adopt similar principles to improve refereeing standards. The perception of untouchable authority among senior referees must be dismantled to create an environment where all officials feel empowered to prioritize the integrity of the game. The Arsenal vs. Wolves match should not be seen as an isolated incident but as the starting point for much-needed reform.
