There have been several situations discussed in the media of violence against women where the guilty party was not held accountable. This needs to change. Violence against women is never acceptable, never excusable, and never tolerable. #gndr1000
The statistic that the number of First Nations children entering the child welfare system rose to a staggering 71.5% between 1995 and 2001 is devastating. Has there been a decrease since? In this increase due to their Indigenous identity? #gndr1000
@Muhamma88496352 Agreed, many people consider a stay at home parent to be someone who does not contribute. In my opinion, a stay at home parent has the toughest job of all. Raising and caring for a family is no easy task and those who do it should be recognized in a positive light. #gndr1000
I believe the "Janet Smylie Toronto subway exercise" is a great way to help put an end to unintentional racism. If more people practiced this, it would lead to less judgmental attitudes, allow people to see two sides of a situation, and help prevent unintentional racism #gndr1000
@SophieB29341295 I too found these statistics to be shocking. The most concerning to me was the median individual income of Inuit in Inuit Nunangat is nearly 70 thousand dollars less than non-Indigenous people in the same location. This inequality is staggering. #gndr1000
Much of humanity today is overwhelmingly concerned with looks and image. There is to much focus on conforming to society's definition of "beauty." This should not be the case, our only concerns regarding our bodies should be feeling happy, comfortable and healthy. #gndr1000
@OfoegbuMabel I agree, after watching Cameron Russell's Ted talk, "Looks aren't everything, Believe me, I'm a model" it really showed that the body types people idolize and desire aren't even real, they are constructed by professionals to portray a particular image. #gndr1000
Often, we do not see images of people with larger bodies exercising. This might make those with this body type feel they are not capable of exercising or suppose to exercise. It is time the media shows individuals with every body type, exercise is not just for one group.#gndr1000
@SmithGenavieve I agree! Social media has further aggravated the issue. Instead of showing people an "ideal" body, social media should be used as a platform to teach people to accept themselves for who they are and what they look like. #gndr1000
@DanielleBickfo2 I agree that no one should be ashamed of who they are, no matter what background you come from. Being Indigenous is something to be proud of, it is a shame she left school because of it. #gndr1000
While our country deserves to be celebrated, I don't think Canada 150 was the proper way to do it. First Nations, Métis, and Inuit peoples have called this land home for well over 150 years. Canada 150 only celebrates colonization, we must honour our entire history. #gndr1000
@Courtwag1 Agreed, while celebrating our Country is fine; I think all aspects of who we are and where we came from should be recognized. First nations people deserve to be recognized, and celebration shouldn't be solely centred around the colonization of our country. #gndr1000#Canada150
The video "Will Multiracial Kids End Racism?" was both interesting and informative. As the video demonstrates, Multiracial people will not put an end to racism. Racism is a sad reality of our world that in my opinion, will unfortunately never go away. #gndr1000
@gillingham_jane @HopeRidgeley@nms844 Well said! Often as Canadians, we tend to ignore many of the disturbing aspects of our own history as a country and assume that things such as slavery only happened in the United States which was clearly not the case. #gndr1000
Maysoon Zayid's says the intersection of being Palestinian, Muslim, Female and Disabled would make her the winner of an oppression Olympics. Maysoon is so inspiring despite the unfortunate oppression shes faced throughout her life because she always remained positive #gndr1000
@CritchJessica I too found her Ted talk to be very eye-opening. Not only are people with disabilities underrepresented, but they are also misrepresented. I especially liked the part where she said: "if a wheelchair user cant play Beyonce, then Beyonce can't play a wheelchair user." #gndr1000
Regarding the terms pansexual, asexual, and demisexual, I had heard them used before but was not wholly familiar with their meaning. This course & the glossary from the 519 has educated me on many different terms such as these that people use to describe their sexuality #gndr1000
@jennny1205 I too found this portion of the video shocking. People in today's society are so quick to assume gender based on a person's expression. I wonder if we will ever reach a point where things like "tough" and "flirty" no longer associate with a particular gender? #gndr1000
The film #transforminggender was inspiring. The people in the film showed that being trans isn't always the stereotypical depiction where trans people know their identity as a child and have always known. Transgender identity can emerge at any point in the life cycle #gndr1000
@fafdeb I agree. It is hard to believe things like the #sissyboyexperiment happen in our world. All children should be able to express themselves in any manner they wish and live life whichever way they feel comfortable and happy. #gndr1000
