Well played @EmilSutovsky, @vishy64theking and @FIDE_chess. Someone had to bell the (Magnus) cat. Even if they waited until he was no longer good enough to do well in classical #chess (aka *real* chess), and started losing rapid games too. Good riddance. Better late than never.

Yup, after years of folding, FIDE finally has a world champion who outperformed Carlsen at the Olympiad top board, and finally call Carlsen's bluff. Not bad PR too, since Carlsen wasn't going to be able to defend his World Rapid title, and now this just comes across as a tantrum.

@FabianoCaruana thinks @DGukesh has a 30% chance against @MagnusCarlsen in a classical match. Which means he rates Carlsen's chances to at least hold Gukesh to a 6-6 draw much higher than 70%? Wonder how he'd rate chances for himself, @anishgiri, @lachesisq, etc against Carlsen?

@anair64 @GMJacobAagaard @Bennyficial1 Agreed, the FIDE ratings sometimes don’t reflect current strength. @MagnusCarlsen’s 2831 is probably more reflective of his strength in classical chess than @vishy64theking’s 2751, but he’s definitely not the best in the world in classical at the moment. That has to be Gukesh.

As @GMJacobAagaard recently mentioned to @Bennyficial1, Carlsen's last classical tournament win was Wijk '22. And Gukesh has been winning everything he sets out to win, including the Candidates and finishing ahead of Carlsen at the Budapest #ChessOlympiad.
