"When it is effective, writing is rhetorical, i.e., it takes into account the values, ideologies, interests, needs, and commitments of the people, the audiences, for whom it is intended."
-NCTE
To the “artist” who digs their heels in, refuses to “conform,” and sells none of their shit:
I question your vision. Do you not see how the audience, your personality, and society at-large is the real medium?
If they don’t get a laugh where the wanted a laugh, they revise the joke.
If you don’t get the response you want, revise yourself. Your job is to diagnose what isn’t working and fix it. Is it not foolish to continue doing the same thing? (insert “definition of insanity” quote)
The audience simply helps them decide what should stay, what should be changed, and what should be cut in order to achieve their desired outcome: to make a living writing & performing.
When they’re in a town that doesn’t respond well to a certain kind of material, they don’t use it there.
They don’t ask the audience for material. They came with a notebook full of their ideas, opinions, stories, and observations.
Night after night, they tweak a sentence here, or the inflection of their voice there. If they can make it work, it stays. If it was a “had to be there” joke that isn’t landing, they drop it.
It’s like a comedian working on new material for an upcoming special. They turn thousands of written words into “bits” to test in front of small audiences in rinky-dink comedy clubs.
Determine:
Which opinions divide the audience the way you’ve determined works best, and which ones provoke a response but don’t get you closer to your goal.
