@howertonjosh@gavin_adams God repeatedly spares murderers from execution in Scripture — starting with the first one.
There are biblical grounds for the death penalty as policy.
There are also biblical grounds for mercy as policy.
To pretend otherwise flattens the text
@TylerLeeConway This is great. Thanks for putting it together and sharing.
His political theology is so rough. I want to attribute it to bad exegesis (which is manifold in these videos) — but I think he’s just a “popularizer” of other people’s ideas.
@Son_of_Dogg@howertonjosh It’s straight from the Mark Driscoll School of Ministry Platform Building. Sharp opinions, dualistic thinking — the confidence and certainty draws a certain kind of crowd.
The NRSV take is wild. The translation does not eliminate “Father” language.
@McPherson_Josh1 μαθητεύσατε πάντα τὰ ἔθνη does not mean “disciple nation states.” In its Jewish context, Jesus is opening the ethnic gates — “Make disciples [of (from among)] all ethnic groups/Gentiles.” Not just Israel.
@joelrainey@howertonjosh They are over-indexing on the WHAT (platforms, policies) and under-indexing the HOW (the way power is being used). Both are important. Not saying the Ds are great on either, but the Rs are wielding power in a deeply unsettling (and ungodly IMO) way this administration.
@howertonjosh Perhaps I'm missing your point, but isn't any ideology, taken to its extreme, dangerous and non-compatible with Kingdom ethics? And so instead of advocating for "what" people should think politically, we disciple people on "how" to think within a robust Kingdom framework?
@howertonjosh Political violence seems to be a feature of political extremism - not just "secular progressivism."
Most recent CSIS data shows uptick in left-wing terrorism for 2025 (alarming!) - but also a pattern of right-wing terrorism as dominant for 30+ years.

@howertonjosh@ryanburge And so tying the church’s mission too tightly to conservatism risks mistaking cultural receptivity for genuine spiritual renewal… and may end up obscuring the gospel rather than advancing it. 🤷
@howertonjosh “This is why there is radically disproportionate violence emerging on the Left.”
Is this take based on personal observation or data? If the latter, can you share?
@DeanAbbott If he initiated the date, it seems like basic social etiquette that he’d cover the bill.
But beneath that, I believe it carries an older symbolic weight — the gesture that he will provide. A kind of remnant relational ritual.
