Your child is not your emotional support animal. Let that sink in.
When we, as parents, start relying on our kids to meet our needsāfor validation, for comfort, for connectionāweāre flipping the script. And even if itās unintentional, it can become a covert form of emotional abuse.
Iāve caught myself in this.
I walk in the door after a long day, hoping for the āDaddyās home!ā fanfare. Sometimes I get it. Sometimes I donāt. And when I donāt, it stings.
But hereās the thing:
Itās not my kidsā job to regulate my emotions. Itās mine.
When kids start to feel responsible for our happiness, they carry a weight that can shape their entire identity. They learn to overfunction, to people please, to suppress their own needs in service of ours.
Thatās not love. Thatās survival.
So letās be real with ourselves:
Are we showing up to meet their needs?
Or are we quietly asking them to carry ours?

That kid in the bushes, pirating WiFi from a neighborās house just to play Fortnite?
Not a joke. Not an outlier. Not all that different from addiction as we know it.
Video gamesāand screens in generalācan light up the brainās reward system just like a drug. And for a lot of teens, it is the drug. The escape. The comfort. The thing that makes life bearable.
Take it away too fast and you donāt just get a grumpy kid. You get full-on dysregulation. Agitation. Rage. Withdrawal.
But hereās whatās wild:
After a few weeks in treatment, off the phones and consolesā¦A different version of that kid starts to show up. One thatās calmer. More connected. Able to self-regulate again.
Iām not saying screens are the enemy.
But if we want to help the next generation feel something other than numb, weāve got to understand the why behind the behavior.

Or a walk.
Or a call to someone who gets it.
Then ask yourself: Do I still want it?
