@anzedetn Then it should be easy to track so it’s weird that they let you guys go. I had situation where I was producing positive ROAS, led to two funding rounds but the founder hired a creative strategist (not really but close) & it got so bad because we have no control over creative.
@neodtc @TomCourant But that’s just media buying language ? I started as an affiliate marketer and are now HOD for a SAAS company. Those are stages of awareness yes but it doesn’t really prove competence. What you need are results and not just results but data, as much as he/shes allowed to share.
@jasonfried@vladimir_gro The thing about democracy + capitalism is money is a byproduct of business not the direct output.
Because you can't force people to buy so there's no direct causation from business to money. So business is not about money.
I shouldn't give away this sauce... but it's life changing as a creative strategist.
Winning ads truly come down to this one thing.
Almost nobody talks about it because it takes about 1,000+ reps to notice the pattern.
And once you see it, you can never see a winning ad the same way again.
I'm talking about Internal Narrative Identity.
This DOES NOT mean personas. Because personas are what WE think of the audience. Internal Narrative Identity is what THEY THINK OF THEMSELVES.
You have to speak directly to the identity you're targeting from the music, to the background/setting, to the font, to the UGC creator's necklace. EVERY LITTLE THING.
Showing the popcorn ceiling with a smoke detector does more than you think.
Showing someone with a tattoo on their neck gives you an idea about how they think.
Showing a coffee mug that was handmade and hand painted gives the audience another thing to judge.
All of these things subconsciously signal who it's for.
Identity also shapes the messaging, the offer, the framing, the emotional triggers, everything.
That's why the foundation of any winning ad is identity.
And the best way to understand their identity is by doing deep research.
How to do this:
Collect hundreds of real audience comments with Perplexity, score them, find patterns, debunk fake ones, and put together a plan for targeting what people care about based on the proof. No guessing or assumptions based on how WE see people, but how THEY SEE THEMSELVES.
If you want my Internal Identity Research Report Prompt, REPOST and comment "ID."
Josh's job is Head of Paid Search. What he built off his own back has changed how we operate entirely.
He isn't a developer, but he saw a problem nobody had formally named and decided to fix it himself.
The problem: we were managing £170M+ in spend across 250+ brands and the data that actually mattered was everywhere.
Shopify for revenue. Meta Ads Manager for spend. Triple Whale for attribution. A spreadsheet for forecasting. Another for reporting. Foreplay/Motion for creative analytics.
Every team member + client starting their day opening six tabs, piecing together a picture that still didn't fully reconcile.
Josh looked at that and thought: someone should fix this.
So he did. Alone.
He built the Control Room. A native Shopify app pulling live data from Meta, Google, TikTok, and Shopify into one dashboard. A 12-month revenue forecast built from each brand's own historical data & modelling. Targets tracked against actuals every day. Incremental reach calculated automatically. Creative win rate. Growth Compass score. All of it live. All of it automated.
300+ hours of development. Two months waiting for Shopify app approval.
We're 70 people. Josh built this alongside a full-time role because he saw a gap and had the conviction to close it. The fact that we're sitting ahead of teams with ten times the resource is insane and it’s all down to the culture we’ve built.
It's what happens when someone takes ownership of a problem nobody assigned them.
The Control Room has recently began rolling out to tens of clients we manage. Every brand gets it from day one. Forecasting, Analytics & Reporting all under one roof.
This is one piece of our new growth compass framework. If you’d like to get your own Growth Compass score and have a sneak of the framework...
