This week, Inspire Us proudly attended the UN Global Refugee Forum Progress Review 2025 in Geneva — a full-circle moment after the success of our initiatives in Dadaab, Kenya. The biggest refugee camp in Africa: population 400 000+

Two years ago, we planted a seed. Today, we see it beginning to grow.

It’s an honour to call Abdullahi Mire (@miire06) — NANSEN award laureate and founder of @ryehhub20 — a friend and partner. In 2026, we will open Dadaab’s first podcast and media studio together, giving young people space to tell their own stories.

We also want to acknowledge @YGamadid, Chevening Scholar who grew up in Dadaab and later studied at SOAS, where we met. His journey sparked this mission, and he continues to inspire us, Dadaab, and young Somalis committed to rebuilding their future.

Moreover, none of this would have been possible without Mohamed Othowa, founder of Community Aid Network — a refugee led organisation and our closest partner. We communicated daily. His honesty, humility and courage shaped everything we achieved. We thank the CAN team, and Hamdi Mohamed, who worked closely with us and was the first to sign our jersey when we returned.

As @FilippoGrandi said in his keynote speech:
“Yes to humanitarian funding to bridge the short-term, but a much bigger yes to development funding from development actors.”

Visiting Dadaab is not simple. Security concerns mean most organisations avoid it and focus on Kakuma camp. In the context of USAID cuts — what many in the camp called the “Trump Crisis” — showing up mattered. Being seen matters.

Sports is at the heart of our work — especially football. It unites cultures and restores dignity. We organised a 32-team football tournament and a girls’ volleyball match, delivered sports and media equipment, in collaboration with Community Aid Network. Over 400 athletes participated and more than 10,000 spectators attended.

We back one of the tournament jerseys made in Dadaab to be signed by individuals who champion refugees — building a bridge between the Global North and South — and will return it as a message: we see you, we stand with you. It has been an honour to receive signatures such as @RoryStewartUK and Ramla Ali.

This project was built through trust and partnership. More than 50 people worked with us, staff, referees, media, logistics and community leaders.

We continue to remind ourselves: you do not need to wait to be a millionaire to make a change. Your knowledge, skills, heart and courage are worth more than money.

Our Project DADAAB 2027 will push the boundaries of grassroots development.

This is only the beginning.

The day you plant the seed is not the day you eat the fruit. Work diligently, patiently and continuously.

This life is precious. This time is precious. Make the most of it.

I also joined side events on refugee inclusion in education and employment two areas I’m deeply passionate about.

After 12 days refugees in Dagahaley one of the camps in Dadaab, will finally be allowed to access their food rations. @WFP_Kenya

A heartfelt thank you to the youth leaders of Dagahaley for resolving a problem that those who were highly paid to protect refugees could not solve.

This is why I firmly believe that local problems need local solutions.
