After Russia bombed a UNESCO World Heritage site and killed Ukrainian civilians, Italy's PM Meloni said it plainly: "We can't look away."

Speaking alongside Japan's Prime Minister ahead of the G7 summit, Meloni said support for Ukraine and the pursuit of peace will be central elements of the summit. She specifically named Russia's attacks on millennia-old symbols of Christianity and UNESCO heritage sites as the reason solidarity is not optional.

Italy and Japan reaffirmed their commitment to defending international law and achieving a just and lasting peace. The G7 will also push to reactivate the negotiating process to end the war.

The G7 is meeting. The Kyiv Pechersk Lavra is still damaged. The timing is not lost on anyone.

Kyiv Pechersk Lavra was founded in 1051, with the Dormition Cathedral being built from 1073-1078, predating Notre-Dame by over a century.
