I was in Jordan last month trying to go into Palestine. I had the privilege of visiting Palestine before because I hold a Canadian passport. I wasn’t sure about visiting Palestine before because my own friends who are Palestinian who are refugees have not had their right of return to their traditional homelands respected and fulfilled, because Israel is illegally occupying Palestine and controls Palestine’s borders.

There are stark contradictions and tensions as a non-Palestinian visiting Palestine with a Canadian passport. I have spent time with Indigenous friends on Turtle Island who do not see themselves as Canadian because Canada is a settler colonial state that has stolen and occupied their land of sovereign Indigenous Peoples, and has committed genocide against Indigenous Peoples on Turtle Island. Turtle Island is being occupied by Canada, a settler colonial state. While Canada also currently continues to send and supply Israel, another settler colonial state, with weapons and arms parts to continue committing genocide against Palestinians in Gaza.

However, it has been because of my privilege with having a Canadian passport, being a foreigner, and non-Palestinian that I have been previously allowed into Palestine, by the illegal occupying military force known as Israel. This time when I tried to go into Palestine, Israeli forces held me at the border in Palestine for a day and eventually deported me back to Jordan. The reason being “public security or public safety or public order considerations”. This is not an uncommon experience for many, including humanitarian volunteers, but especially to Palestinians who are trying to visit and reunite with their families and loved ones in their traditional homelands.

It is unjust and wrong that the Israeli military controls Palestine’s borders. I look forward to the day that Palestine is free from illegal occupation, and may we all be able to visit Palestine upon permission and invitation by Palestinians as the Indigenous People of their land, to help rebuild, and to create new collective memories together. From Turtle Island to Palestine, occupation is a crime. Free the people, free the land.
